I'm looking for a recommendation for good brand of front brake discs (and pads) for a 06 ford s-max, I intend to get them on ebay and have a lad fit them. Thanks

If it's just normal run of the mill stuff, Pagid are pretty good.

I'd buy them in a Ford dealer and then get them fitted yourself. That way you know you have the best discs for the s-max. For the kind of crap weather and driving conditions we get in this country don't try to save on brake discs....

Or with a bit of research, find out what pads/discs Ford use and source them yourself, saving €€.

We offer Mintex as a middle of the road pad, not a performance pad but generally better than OEM. I've used them myself and even did a couple of trackdays on them and they were fine. For everyday driving they are pretty good

Mintex stuff is excellent, we use them in the race school and we have never had any issues with them.

Ah jaysis, they're alright like, I wouldn't say excellent. ENDLESS are excellent ;)

Is there a massive difference in quality ?

I just bought Bosch Discs, they seem fine.

There is a massive difference in quality between different brands. We had a car (160ish BHP) that couldn't stop when it was running Apec pads and discs, changed it to Endless pads and OEM discs and now it would stop on a penny

Even in brands, depending on country of origin (eg germany v china), according to my mechanic. Same label, but could be significant difference in the weight of the disc...

I've noticed that alright, even with electronics.

Outsourced manufacturing can have a high failure rate than inhouse

What compound Mintex were you using, M1144, M1155, M1166 or Carbon Metallic? Mintex Middle of the road - Ya right! Wrong compound I'd say........

I'd rate Mintex up there for competition pads. I was in a Civic last weekend using SIR calipers and Mintex Carbon Metallic pads and there was no problem with repeated 110mph stops. There was so much heat that the discs were starting to glow and still no problem with stopping...

OP, I've always used Mintex or Ferodo pads on all my cars.

Drag racing isn't as hard on the pads as you'd think (I assume you were dragging?) Using them on the track is a different ballgame and they wouldn't come near other makes of competition pad. Don't get me wrong, for road use you can't go wrong with Mintex but to rate them as high as Endless or other brands then you're fighting a loosing battle dude

Nope, I was setting up a Forest Rally Car!

Having tried both Mintex Carbon Metallic and Carbone Lorraine in similar cars with similar brake set-ups, the Mintex was every bit as good over the testing day.

Oh, and in case your wondering, Carbone Lorraine are used by Citroen in the WRC, so they are a fraction good, if expensive.

As for Endless, I know somebody that had them in a rally car, and threw them out at first service they were that bad.....

I know all about the Carbone Lorraine pads dude, We ran a number of different pads in the touring car and Endless came out the best. Cars running Endless also came 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th in the Nurburgring 2011 24hr race.

Jesus, if only there was a registered 'endless' dealer somewhere in Dublin who could put these on all our cars.......
