Right guys bought a 2001 almera a while ago, and it now has engine management light on. I'm trying to weigh up my options as in knocking it out. (1)Worst case stretched chain,(2) cat and (3) lambada or all..

I used to have access to diagnostic machinery but not any more:( :(:(

I'm pretty hopeful it's not the chain as it's running perfect with rev counter spot on.

Any ideas on a quick diagnostic around this, I know a few guys with the machines but their not really into free diagnostics, maybe they are but I don't want to ask..

    And I'm pure skint..

    Cheers for any help

I don't think the cat would bring it on unless it was blocked and you'd know all about that if it was blocked.

If its running fine then I would say the chain should be ok as the signs would be it struggling to start, feeling sluggish and generally misfiring.

If the cat wasn't working correctly it would be causing the post cat lamda to read incorrectly and throw an eml;)

hi there, i had same problem. i have a 01 almera with 115k/mls now. the timing chain needed at 100k, as its a common fault. started with EM light on, nothing else, computer reads camshaft sensor fault. cost me 500euros including chain+2sensors(have to be replaced)+servise. so, best luck.

Dude cheers and all but there are more sensors than just the crank ones so I'm not going for the chain first (in the hope) it's something else..

The car runs perfect starting and driving wise guess I'll just have to get her plugged in or pull off the rocker cover..
