I am 2.5 months into an 1 year internship with a large engineering firm. I find the work ok and boring at times but its something I don't want to do long term. I am a graduating at the end of this month.

I have seen a full time internal position that I would like to apply for. I am not sure what to do. Either see out my internship or apply for this job. If I apply for this job I will have to tell my manager about my intentions and the thing is I don't know how he will react to it.

I am kind of nervous as if I make a move, it could give the manager a bad impression.

At the moment your working for free, so whats stopping you applying for a full time job? If you dont get it you can carry on working for free, if you do get the job it goes to show that the company value your employment and want to keep you.

If they dont offer you the job then it says to me that at the end of your 12th month you will be let go anyhow.

Go for it, you have nothing to loose and everything to gain.

Definitely apply. I would think it gives your manager and those who will interview you a good impression - that you like the company and the people who work there, and you see a future with them.

In fact, I think it will look worse if you don't apply!

    Company's options

    A) Give you the fully paid position. Cost to company? €30k+
    B) Keep you on an unpaid internship for free. Cost to company? Free or as close as provided you don't make costly mistakes.

Think about the companies bottom line in €€€ and you have your answer OP- I hate to burst your bubble but I'd say, in the current climate, it is not a good idea to apply for this particular job as it is internal and they already have you for free.

Also applying for it only 2.5 months into your internship may leave you liable to claims of 1) A lack of focus for the job in hand and 2) Being above your station (whether true or not that can be the connotation)

My advise is to keep applying for paid roles in other companies, use your internship to good advantage during interviews.

And what does he have to loose by applying for the job?

Its not like they could sack him unless of course they made up some bogus excuse and if they are that bad he would be better off out of there. And even if he did get sacked from the internship whats lost? Its not like it was a fantastic paid salary position with good prospects, at the end of 12 months he is out of there anyhow!

Lets face it, WPP, CE Schemes and Internships are nothing more than cheap labour, you have nothing to loose by applying for a real job and getting off the slave labour scheme.

    Hi Lads,

Surely the point of these internships is that the company can train you into thier way of working so that you can get fulltime employment? now i may be wrong but if the company have a full time place there should the OP not go for it, and have a better chance of getting it as he already works there.

if its a case they give you some BS excuse why you dont get it, report them to fas for taking advantage of the WPP scheme, thats assuming you have all the relevant quals and exps for the job.

companies are only looking for free labour and they should be reported if a good case like this one comes up. go for the job and see what happens, you should be in a better position than most as you are there already.
