Wedding insurance is cheap. I think it's incredibly important to have it. If something does go wrong it will be the best money you've spent for the wedding.

A few months ago on Liveline a couple had taken out insurance for peace of mind. Unfortunately the wedding venue closed its doors before the wedding took place. The couple were informed that the insurance didn't cover this - something to do with the venue not going into liquidation but just closing their doors and going out of business (somebody might have more details about the finer points on insurance - I was just listening) Apparently this is all in the extra small print of the policy. Anyway the couple were out of pocket to the tune of 7K.

work it out in your head OP

what are the chances of something going wrong ? is there a risk a shop/hotel/venue could go bust ?

is there a chance of wedding being called off ?

How many weddings take place every year ? How many are planned and dont go ahead - I would suggest a very small percentage.

Personally I think most insurance policies are a joke because the fine print usually absolves the insurance companies from paying out in the most likely scenario.

if you are going to get insurance - talk to the insurance broker and ensure you have cover for the things which are out of your control and could stop the wedding.

if you are not getting insurance - spend the extra couple of quid on a nice piece of lingerie or swimsuit or dress .... or use it on the honeymoon.

    PS. Congrats on impending marriage.

(Marriage is an institution - I'm not ready to be institutionalised....YET !)

Im getting married in a few weeks. I reckon its a waste of money, and I work for an insurance company that sells it! Hopefully I am right.

Its only a wast eof money if you dont need it, likewise its only a good investment if you have to make a claim.

Hindsight is 20/20. Question is for a few quid do you want to risk it or not ? If oyu want to risk it and somethign goes wrong dont exxpect sympathy from anybody.

Hey guys, we want to take out wedding insurance as the venue we're looking at booking wants a large amount a good 6 months before the wedding so this will deffo give us peace of mind.

Does anyone have any recommendations as to who are the best companies to check out. I've been looking at irishweddinginsurance.ie and weddinginsurance.ie and they look pretty similar. Anyone had any experience with these?

Thanks for all the replies !!! Still not sure what to do!

As ppl have pointed out in there replies typical ins companies and there "fine print" but with the way the world is right now chances of a hotel going under are high ! but how much would the ins policy to protect my dosh be if i was to have all the ifs and buts covered!!

I guess all i can do is make a list of what i would like covered - ring around for quotes and cover details and take it from there !

In the states wedding ins is one of the 1st thing ppl take out !? but then again they are also paying $60-$150 upwards for there weddings !!!

thanks again for your posts please keep them coming as i would like to hear more views from ppl

I plan on getting irishweddinginsurance.ie when we have the wedding date decided on. They only sell insurance with a definite day set. They work out slightly cheaper than the other one (weddinginsurance.ie) with a slightly higher cover.
I don't think all eventualities are covered by insurance, such as strike, however if there's a family emergency, or bankruptsy or liquidation of a supplier, then that's covered. I'd rather pay the extra 100 for that little-bit of peace of mind.

Blue insurance also do the insurance but I think you're right and irishweddinginsurance.ie is the cheapest, it's basically the same as the Blue one but cheaper!

I will be getting it for sure!

Would wedding insurance typically cover cancellation in the event of bad weather etc?
I'm getting married in November and the only thing I'm worried about is getting snowed in again and having to postpone it or something, or losing suppliers because they're snowed in.

If you book something on your credit card, aren't you then covered if the company goes into liquidation?

We didn't get it. Figured the risks were low , the venue was probably the only risk.

    Hi

I rang about the cover for myself and it was basic cover for things like illness and if companies go bust etc...! be worth ringing around and see if weather is covered and if not ask if they can add it in for an extra cost?

Was just looking at it myself and if the weather prevents bride/groom/close family from getting to the wedding then you're covered.

We didn't. But I am (probably unreasonably) cynical about insurance outside of the things that really make sense.

wedding insurance, pet insurance, no claims bonus protection insurance, income protection insurance, ski insurance because normal travel insurance won't cover it, credit card protection insurance.... you could spend your salary and more on wrapping your life in cotton wool.

Go on, live on the edge. Take a risk and don't take it out

Difference is none of those other policies should you not have them and need them woudl cost what refixing a wedding is likely to cost. Depends on your budget of course.

For some people outside of buying a home or car. Their wedding will be the biggest single outlay they ever make.

You would insure your car and your house so why not your wedding ...

Theres no right or wrong answer but If somebody I knew came to me and told them they lost their dream wedding due to having no insurance Id tell them they were an idiot.

If the same perosn told me they paid for wedding insurance but didnt ahve to claim on it I certainly wouldnt be callign them an idiot.
