You could try rev matching so you can get it into 5th. Had to do that for a couple of weeks in an old car.

I often don't use the clutch shifting up through the gears in the passat, the clutch is alright but specially in 4th and 5th it's so easy to just slot it into gear when changing up and simple enough going down

...edit i realise "i often don't" sounds wrong and is wrong but i've had a few pints

Had the same problem with my own car, it turned out to be the 'gear linkage' to be at fault, I would advise you to get sombody who knows what they are at to have a look at it.

perfectly easy to shift up the box without the clutch, going down takes a bit of practise.

I know I tried it a few times in my old Corolla and found it easy enough once you matched the engine revs and speed.

I just wouldn't do it very often like Conrad :D
