Changing Time of Pre Booked Ticket

    Hi Folks,

I've been looking at the FAQs on the irish real website but can't see anything on this scenario but I've seen it mentioned by a few people here before.

I'd prebooked a train ticket from Kilkenny to Athlone return. I'm due to return tomorrow but as things turn out I might be ready to get an earlier train back than I had originally booked.

From what others have said to do this I need to go to the ticket booth and may have to pay a small extra charge to validate the new trains I'll be getting.

Is this as straight forward as it sounds? I'm expecting some sort of catch :P? Is there anything on the irish rail website about doing this? I can't see it.

Second question when booking a rail ticket online is it possible to book a return without specifying the actual train you will return on? i.e. just the date. I've tried but can't seem to do it so don't think its possible but if it is would love to know.

There may be a small charge to cover any difference in price between the two online tickets but sometimes the ticket office staff just endorse the ticket with no charge at all. the cost could be as high as €40 though depending on how many online bookings have been made for the earlier train.

Often used pre-booked tickets on Galway - Heuston. Actual travel time often varied from time on ticket, never had a problem, even when the ticket was inspected

They can say you were travelling without a valid ticket as the online tickets were only valid on one particular train. you were lucky not to encounter the revenue protection unit who would fine you €100 and also make you pay full price for a ticket to travel!

Not really, as the price can vary.
