Bert & Ernie

Just saw this on the Journal (I don't think there's a thread on it).

    http://thedailyedge.thejournal.ie/thousands-call-for-muppet-marriage-between-bert-and-ernie-198783-Aug2011/
LOTS OF COUPLES might feel pressure to get married – but not many have thousands of people sign a petition calling for them to tie the knot.
That’s the situation faced by long-time Sesame Street roommates Bert and Ernie after their home city of New York legalised gay marriage last month. The pair have lived together in a basement apartment at 123 Sesame Street, sharing a bedroom, since the show’s inception in 1969 – leading to long-running speculation that their relationship was romantic – but have never acknowledged anything more than a close friendship.
The petition, which has been signed by more than 4,000 people calls for the show’s creators “to allow Bert and Ernie to marry”. One commenter on the campaign’s Facebook page wrote “I think that two people [or puppets] who have lived together for over 40 years should get married if they want to”, with another adding: “I always wanted those two to tie the knot, their sexual tension is irresistible”.
The petition adds that a marriage on kids’ TV would “teach tolerance of those that are different”. However, critics of the idea have posted angry comments. One wrote: “there is nothing gay about bert & ernie, there just two guys who share a room & enjoy each others company, it’s called friendship!!!

What do people make of this?

I myself think it's absolutely ridiculous. So gay marraige is passed in NYC and now sectors of the gay community want to thrust their agenda (whatever it may be!) in everyone's face that's grown up with the likes of Bert and Ernie, not to mention children who enjoy these characters from Sesame Street currently. This is the kind of thing that pisses me off about certain sections of the gay community.

What kind of message does it send? Progressive? I don't think so. I think it could confuse children if anything. Two lads living together, they must be gay! Right?! Let them enjoy the institution of friendship - which is more important for younger children to learn about it. Tolerance can come a bit later on. Besides, I don't think there should be any romantic involvements for any Sesame Street characters really. I don't see the point in that.

Sesame Street has been progressive in teaching children about many aspects of culture and society in varied ways, but why make two popular characters gay? If they want to go down that root then introduce new characters. It shouldn't be thrust upon them with this ridiculous petition (not that I think it will make any difference).

I thought this was stupid, then I saw your hysterical response to the petition. Now I support it as it would be hilarious

For the record 'their agenda' is in reference to the moron(s) who started the petition and his 'followers'. Not gay people in general! :)

I remember once Ernie was eating cookies in bed and Bert said "Hey, you can't eat cookies in your bed"
So Ernie got into Berts bed to eat them instead.

He was a crazy guy, Ernie.

And that gays being married is normal!?

Sad that Sesame Street comes under so much pressure. First the Cookie Monster has to eat a balanced diet and exercise, now this...how long until Elmo has to get an intervention for meth?!

    🤪

E: "Oh, but you'll love this game, Bert! See all you have to do is, you say something, and then I'll say something that rhymes with what you just said!"
    B: "Uh-huh, yeah, but I really don't want to play a game."
E: "Maybe not Bert, but we'll do it all the same!
You see that, you said game and I said same, and game and same both rhyme!"
B: "Yeah, uh-uh, rhyme, I know. But Ernie, it's just not what I want to do."
E: "Wiggle your finger, and waggle your shoe!"
    (drums start)
B: "Uh, Ernie, I'd much rather sit and read my book."
E: "With ears you hear, and with eyes you look!'
B: "Now come on Ernie, cut this out."
E: "Easy old buddy, no need to shout!"
B: "I don't want to play a game with rhymes!"
E: "Nice going Bert, oh ring my chimes!"
    B: "I don't wanna do it!"
E: "There's really nothing to it!"
    B: "It's so silly."
    E: "A boy named Billy."
    B: "Stop it, please!"
    E: "A dog has fleas!"
    B: "Oh!"
    E: "Mow!"
B: "Ernie, please this has got to stop!"
E: "Some people like to jump and hop!"
B: "What what hmmm?! I don't want to do it anymore!"
E: "Oh. One and two and three and four."
    B: "Ernie!"
    E: "Bernie!"
    B: "Stop it!"
    E: "Mop it!"
    B: "Stop!"
    E: "Flop!"
    B: "No!"
    E: "Flow!"
    B: "Mmmmmmm....Hippopotamus!
    E: "Ahhhhh...rhipototopus!"
B: "Egh! Alright, alright! I give up!"
E: "Eat from a plate and drink from a cup!"
B: "I guess I'll just have to play along."
E: "It plays like a game and sings like a song!"
B: "You may be right, I may be wrong."
E: "A clock goes tick and a bell goes bong."
B: "This game is really kinda kicky!"
E: "Sugar's sweet and glue is sticky."
B: "Yeah, water is wet and dust is dry!"
E: "Dogs gotta walk and birds gotta fly!"
B: "It's a great kind of game to play with a friend!"
E: "And now old buddy we've come to the end!"
    (drums stop)
B: "Yah! You're right Ernie, that's a great game ... you" (still in rhythm)
E: "Ah...w-well Bert see, I think I'm gonna go read my book now, okay? Hmm hmm hmm..."

What about Rubber Ducky? Where does he fit in in all this?
What if they got married, things didn't work out and they divorced!? It would be a tramatic custody battle on poor rubber ducky!

Seems to be a favourite hobby of some people to see homosexual relations where there is any hint of any sort of male friendship/bonding etc. Pathetic would be the word.

Not sure if serious or not. If serious, from the OP..
If they want to go down that root then introduce new characters

Although I would rather see Spongebob and Patrick tying the knot. I can't even remember what Bert and Ernie sounded like

They're characters on a Children's TV show, surely they don't need to convey a message promoting gay marriage. There's no evidence to even consider them gay, other than the fact that they're roommates. If this goes through, it will be the most pointless case of political correctness I'll have seen.

Also Noddy and Big Ears seem to have something going on

Personally I couldn't care less whether they marry them off or not, but as someone else said- just because 2 men seem to have a close relationship, does this automatically deem them gay? If so then most of my male friends must to raging homosexuals. Ok so they don't share a bed but they're all good close friends.

As well as that, if they're being married off, why aren't there calls for Kermit and Miss Piggy to get married???? (I wasn't sure if they were yet or not, but according to my sources, i.e. Wikipedia,
Eventually in the films, Kermit started returning her affections and (unwittingly) marries her in The Muppets Take Manhattan, though subsequent events suggest that it was only their characters in the movie that married, and that their relationship is really the same as ever.

I suppose straight marriage is all a bit passé...

I wouldn't take it too seriously guys. Personally, I think it'd be hilarious, but it's not gonna happen.

There is quite a number of people who seem to think so. There's a living to be made by claiming certain people (especially historical figures) for the 'gay team'.

    Because they're not?

Why cant you accept them as they are?

As they are what? Muppets? Friends? Why can't some people stop looking for something that isn't actually there? Fr Ted and Fr Dougal are obviously both gay, I mean they share a bedroom and everything. Obviously gaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyy. I accept Bert and Ernie, as Bert and Ernie. Two characters. There's no need for anything else. Why not Waldorf and Statler? Or maybe the fact that the Sesame Street staff have denied the rumours about them being gay characters? Or that they were actually based on two make friends?
