The original exchange traded fund (ETF) for this is a huge success (symbol GLD)

    Anyone know more about it?

Hmm, I've owned GLD (and SLV) since 2005, haven't sold yet but I'm probably close to, up about 140% at the moment. Not sure I'd get into it now, unless you really think the world is going to pot and fiat currencies are in serious, serious trouble, as the price of gold feels a bit bubble-icious.

Is this etf charged at your marginal tax rate or just cgt?

Profits from all ETFs, like equities, are charged at CGT rates. Only dividends are charged at the marginal rate.

I think that anyone who owns gold via an ETF needs their heads examining.
Other than price traders, most owners of Gold claim to own it due to the fear for fiat currencies. Fine. But if one fears for fiat currencies then I think there is an implied fear in financial markets/securities/paper assets. I cannot then understand people who hold Gold via financial securities.
Surely it is preferrable to own Gold physically, rather than in papaer form.

Also, there have been issues raised in the past 9 months or so regarding the collateralistion of ETF's in general.

    Just my 2c worth.
