insurance claim process

Just looking for some general advice please, as thankfully have never had to do something like this before.

I was involved in an accident yesterday, and all occupants are ok - one occupant whiplash pretty bad, but at least we were able to walk out of a&e, and kids were fine.

The other driver was at fault, admitted it at the scene, and was taken away by the guards.

Today, I rang my insurance company, and they said I can make a claim on my insurance and they would counter claim his insurance. Otherwise I can claim directly from his insurance company. As I initially didn't want any hassle I said that I would go through them, and within 2 mins someone from one of their approved garages had rang to arrange collection of the car to bring it to them.

Since this morning I found out that the other guy is also insured through the same company. Therefore am I better off to get my own independent solictor instead of going through them, ie will they look after my interests?

I'm not sure if I'm making 100% sense as I'm still a bit shook up. Any thoughts or advice very welcome...
