    Hi Guys,

Recently lost my job, and am living with my friend, she owns the house.

Basically, im paying 300 a month, which was fine when i was working, but now im struggling to pay it in JSB, so i wish to apply for rent allowance.

The problem is that shes my friend I dont want to mess up her tax, can sometime tell me, how it would affect her to become a "lanlord". Shes a primary school teacher if that makes a difference.

    Thanks :)

    F.A.S.H

She is entitled to rent a room under the rent a room scheme without declaring the income as long as it is under 10,000 euro for the year which you are well in the clear.
It will not affect her or her tax returns in her employment.

Hi she will need to include any money she gets from the rent a room scheme on her annual income tax return.

If you qualify for rent a room relief, the income you get from renting a room in your home is not liable to PRSI, the Universal Social Charge or income tax. However, it must be included on your annual income tax return.

Link below for full information on the scheme:

What Automan said.. she WILL have to declare it. It WILL affect her tax return. She just won't have to pay tax on it.
