he ll point when he is ready

its in his blood ,some dogs point quicker than others

dont panic ,it ll come out in him ,

you could plant shot pigeons or the like along his route when your out walking him

what age is he now? it can take 2 years or even longer for some dogs to point properly.
If you know anyone with an experienced setter or pointer that is steady on point you can bring your dog out with them..
Have your lad on about 10ft lead and hold him until the other dog comes on point, then walk your dog in from behind along side the other dog until he gets the scent of the bird.
You will have a fair idea by his reaction of what to do next i.e some young dogs will "back" the other dog and go on point no problem, but if your lad gets really excited and goes to "dive in" on the bird apply some more tension on the lead until he steady's or even goes to point. Over time he will learn to stop and point before he is allowed to flush the bird.

You could try a pheasant wing on a length of fishing line. Attach this to a pole or fishing rod. Allow the dog to try and get the wing and keep flipping the wing from one side of the garden to the other each time the dog gets say 2 feet from it. The dog will eventually learn to stop at this distance and not rush into it. This should bring out the point in the dog. Let it get the wing every now and again when you give him a command to flush it to keep the interest up.

Expose the dog the game to ignite the instinct.
I had mine in the field at 2 months rambling along behind me when doing the rounds. Had first point at 3 months on a wild hen. Put a long lead on him & all your control issues are sorted.
Develop the bond & the yard work & the rest will fall into place.
Put the time in & spend all free time with the dog & wait til you see the results. They are both a class breed & you have a combination so could turn out a wonderful dog.
    Best of luck

got my first real point out of my lad last thursday and he is 13 months . i put the long lead on as epointer had stated and it works wonders it makes him slow down and do a more thorough search.
