Quick question... how do I know if my office 2007 is genuine? I seem to remember doing a test on microsofts website years ago when I got office 2003... but cant seem to find a test for this one

    thanks

Open any office application and open the help menu. I'm pretty sure there's an option to check.

hmm Im not seeing it to be honest :(

Are you talking about the help box you get when you press f1..

The only thing i can find in there is instructions on activating.... I follow them... and it tells me instantly that Im activated...

Is that the same as being genuine do you think...????

your office is genuine when you have a COA

its going to look something like this and will be either on the box or stuck on the PC
    coa.gif
    http://www.localpcbuilder.com/images/coa.gif

anything else and its not genuine / you are not correctly licensed to use it

    //edit
there are ways you could have office and not have a COA, but you would know about them as you would have, at a minimum, an email from microsfot with your license or agreement details

Open excel-hit the office button (top left)-excel options-resources-about.

I'm pretty sure Microsoft put some software checker in one of their updates, I've had to update some SP1 versions of XP recently and I think the name of it is "genuine advantage" or something. I would think you'd be getting constant reminders that your software is unlicensed if it was.

The Office Genuine Advantage program is no longer supported by Microsoft, so afaik there is no automated way to check it.

I bought the laptop secondhand and office was on it when I got it. I have 10 days (well 9 now) to take the laptop back if I have any issues.

I told the chap at the counter that its very important the office isnt going to lock after a month or two, like what happened the brother in law. He said he'd be suprised if it did, but he said Id have to check it myself as his guarantee wont cover software after the 10 days.

In a month or two if it locks up Im gonna be pretty screwed. Im wondering if I change the laptops time and date forward a couple of months do you think that would be a good indication?

What version of Office is it? I mean does it include everything like Access, Publisher, or just the basics? If it has full bells and whistles, and you didnt pay €500+ for the privaledge well it likely to be pirated, if you just have Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Onenote I think it is its possibly the home & student release, which is cheap enough and could have been included.
Also you should have got a Microsoft Office restore disc (not with some newer versions) but at the very least a certificate of auntenticity, if you got nothing it could be a pirated copy. If it was a shop sold you this Microsoft would be very interested in knowing and may give you a free license in exchange ;)

Take it back. His Guarantee should still cover the software inside those 10 days, and if he sold it to you on the understanding that it wouldn't expire, he should get it validated for you. Now to be fair to him if he wasn't sure about it (and it doesnt sound like he was) that wasn't much of a guarantee. Still, you're entitled to swap it out or haggle them about it.
