New Hard Drive in macbook

    Hi,

My friend tried to resurrect his macbook yesterday with a new hard drive. He physically installed the drive but we can't install the OS. We tried the Tiger disc he owns but we keep getting an input/output error when we try to use the disc utility to erase it.

I have Snow Leopard on a USB and we were able to format the drive but we were not able to install because there was not enough RAM.

However when we tried to install from the cd after the format Disc Utility returned to the previous message.

Obviously we would like the most up to date OS but anything to start from will do.

    Thank you.

How much RAM does the machine have? Snow Leopard requires 1GB.

Have you tried installing Leopard now that the drive has been formatted?

    Yeah,

I don't have a copy of leopard. I did think of that. Either that or I'll try get him to get some more RAM. Is crucial still the cheapest place to buy?

    Thanks for the help.

Sorry, I meant Tiger. Did you try reinstalling Tiger after formatting the HDD using the SL disc?

Yeah I have. It still doesn't recognise a destination drive. When I go into Disc utility with Tiger Disc in the name on the drive says it has 1.8TB when it is actually a 250GB.

I was wondering if I swapped ram with him, installed SL and then switched it back. Would leopard not start or does it just need to recognise it to install.
