hi,guys, same questions as above, where can i find auto engineer to check Volkswagen polo engine with reasonable price?

just bought a 2005 UK imported Volkswagen polo 1.2 from the garage, the car just passed NCT yesterday, and the garage gives me 3 mths warranty for engine & gear box with 7 days 'bring back' promise if something goes wrong with car, therefore, i woud like to have engine checked, just make sure the engine is fine, because it has 102k miles on the clock.

and i do not know any mechanics, cartell.ie charges nearly 300 euro for inspections. not much money left over after paying for car & insurance. therefore, anyone could suggest me a decent mechanics around dublin to check this car?

    thank you!

A few checks you can make yourself easily.
First- start in morning after leaving overnight or preferably for a few days, if there is a delay in starting and some chugging then your headgasket is going or gone as water is leaking into the cylinder

Second-Warm the engine and, listen very carefully for any strange noises or knocking in neutral throughout the rev range. Now drive it and listen to the engine again for any noises. When the oil is thin noises /wear are much more likely to manifest themselfs

Thirdly- Check the power level, if the power level is good then dont worry too much as low compression manifests itself in reduced power

Lastly- When warm gun it and look into the rear view mirror for smoke

If you are happy with the car and are getting the typical engine and gearbox warranty and it has passed an emissions test yesterday, the engine is quite likely fine. Just get a friend who knows about cars to have a look at it for anything obvious.

there are very useful guild line to check the engine, but only 2nd one is hard for me to do, i do not really know sound of engine that much. this is 3 cylinders engine, i can see the engine is shaking with some noise, just not sure about that noise of running engine whether it is normal?

there are only 3 mths warranty for both of them. i did inspect the car carefully before i took it. i hope that car can last for at lease 3 years without giving me troubles, surely with proper cares & maintains.

The NCT Report states that when the engine/oil temperature at 107 °C , the exhaust emissions (low ldle-736 rpm: co .12vol%; hc 6ppm , hight ldle-2680 rpm :co 0.03 vol%; hc 10ppm)
    , but it passed NCT

I've read some sh*te on the internet in my time but this tops the list...

"if there is a delay in starting and some chugging then your headgasket is going"

I'd be interested in learning the rational behind this statement (as I'm sure would many othe mechanics)

"Second-Warm the engine and, listen very carefully for any strange noises or knocking in neutral throughout the rev range. Now drive it and listen to the engine again for any noises. When the oil is thin noises /wear are much more likely to manifest themselfs"

First off, how does the non initiated decide what is an unusual noise?

    Secondly, rubbish.

"Thirdly- Check the power level, if the power level is good then dont worry too much as low compression manifests itself in reduced power"

Yeah, bring a power level meter with you just in case.

    Jeez....

OP, get a decent Mechanic to give the car a look over.

lomb, I suspect that English is not your first language.

Good for you in trying to assist the OP but bear in mind that you may do more harm than good.

    Cheers
