Roof Coating - Professional vs DIY

    Hello,

Has anyone any experience in getting roof coating done on an old roof?
I got a quote of 1000 from one company and 3000 from another. Basically, we want to coat an old cottage roof to ensure it is sealed and waterproof for another couple of years and to make it look better - all one color as its in pretty bad shape -multicoloured and grey.

Theres roof paint available in shops that claims to seal too so I wonder are we better off to just to paint it ourselves for a coiuple of hundred?

Woudl love to hear any experiences - Thanks!

Just my 0.02, but if you're roof is leaking, you need more than paint..........

You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

Its not leaking, but we want to prevent that.
My question really is, are these roof coating companies worth it? Can they really seal and waterproof my roof for 10 years? or am I better off sealing it myself with a waterproofing roof paint every summer. Thanks!

My parents house is a 2 storey farmhouse on the coast in the NW of Ireland and about 15 years ago they coated the slated roof with bitumen. The site is extremely exposed (its about 1/2 mile inshore and there is still sand build up on the driveway:D)

The only place it has leaked is around the chimneys but thats not a fault of the roof covering. I cant argue with the results but its a fairly agricultural solution that I would not reccomend.

If you are worried about the roof then I think you should look into it in a bit more depth. Stripping the roof, adding a breathable felt membrane and replacing the slates (if required) is a costly option but would last twice or three times longer than the coating and preform much better over that time while adding value to your house instead of decreasing the value.
