Car lying idle for long time

    Hi All,

Next door neighbour has been stranded in the UK for a good few months with another few to go before they return (wife ill)

He has a 00 Primera, good condition, low mileage & would have been looked after.

I see his daughters regulary & thinking of mentioning to them that it may be a good idea to get it started and take it for a short run every now and then so it's running ok when they return, it's been laid up now for approx 6 months

Is this ok or is there anything I should be aware of regarding this as I obviously don't want to do / cause any damage to the vehicle which hasn't been started in 6 months

    Thanks

The battery might need replacing, I suppose a good service is not a bad idea with a brake fluid change. Really depends how much work was done on it before the 6 months. Have a look at the tyres for perished or cracks. Is it even taxed or insured anyway?

I'd have to check the discs to see if valid,

It would have been well maintained and used regulary up to six months ago

A car lying up six months wouldn't be a problem. Especially if, as you say, it has been looked after. If you do start it don't just start it for a few mins but make sure it heats up and if possible bring it for a decent drive so as to get the exhaust and brakes hot to get rid of condensation. If you can't do this leave the car alone would be my advice.

I left one of my cars alone for 2 years from '04 to '06. All I did was recharge the battery and started it and gave it a full service after a hundred miles or so. Its been perfect since.

Just make sure the tyres are safe and the brakes haven't binded or a caliper hasn't seized.
