Terrible fuel consumption , I had one (231bhp model)for about 5-6 weeks about 3 years ago. I was putting an average of 20 euro day at the time , I would say I wouldn't have been doing particularly high mileage either . Nice car to drive alright .

If you're worried about fuel consumption, don't bother looking at them :)

I seriously considered an RX8 for ages last year and this year.

Beautiful car inside and out. Practical and well spec'd. Absolute dream to drive and engine sounds terrific. Also dead cheap to buy.

However the petrol consumption is horrendous and the rotary engine is weird - a good one is fine but they're a lot more prone to abuse and misunderstanding than a normal engine. You can't go on short drives without warming her up properly as this can flood the engine.

Sadly i couldn't live with all its eccentricities and decided against it. Currently saving for a Honda S2000, with the second option being a Lotus Elise.

For the performance ,spec etc you get for no money its worth it imo...these days you can get a re-build for a couple of grand , and you can use a tired/fcuked motor as a bargaining tool....if you wait a few years you can treat yourself to the new 290 bhp one....a lot of fun...

Considering he's one of the most knowledgeable people on this board with regards the Mazda, you should probably be quiet, especially if you're talking nonsense.

I doubt many people (including the OP) are willing to wait three years to buy a car that might come out.

Any details on this? I know there's been all kinds of rumours going around about an updated RX7 and/or an RX9, but last I heard even Mazda weren't totally sure what they were going to do.

Mazda are discontinuing the RX8. It's to be replaced with the new RX7 in a few years time.

Since this is a thread about the RX8 and you didn't mention anywhere in your post that you were referring to a new rotary-engined car, it would read that you were still talking about the RX8.

With that in mind, I thought you were talking about picking up a 2nd hand RX8 in a few years and as we all know, the 8 comes in 2 states of tune - 190bhp and 230bhp. No 290bhp.

Maybe you should re-read/re-write your own posts before calling someone a smart arse.

    +1

And it is far from certain they will come out with a replacement. As in another car with a Wankel engine. They will have to come up with some tremendous improvements to the rotary engine design to meet the latest emissions norms. With ever tighter norms, it might be an uphill struggle going forward.

    +1,

There's been all kinds of rumours about what they will do with the Wankel next, including laser ignition, a hydrogen rotary, a diesel rotary, using rotary turbines to power electric motors, and other stuff.

But I've seen nothing confirmed yet so I'm hoping Sids Not can take a break from Einheisserschre bashing long enough to provide some proof of this 290hp rotary coming in 2014, I'd love to read more about it.

Steven - Audi have come up with (I think) a concept for the A1 whereby a single rotor based on "technology" from the German motor company NSU whom they bought out a long time ago (they are one of the rings) will recharge the car's batteries.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,035 ✭✭✭✭-Chris-

NSU had Wankel too, and it didn't stick around for them either.

It's a flawed technology, I don't know why manufacturers are persisting in trying to make it workable.

That's how Audi got it as einheisserschre posted :D

I for one applaud Mazda for keeping at it. They made a massive improvement (in reliability and longevity) from RX7 to RX8 and if they can pull off a similar jump again, I certainly wouldn't call it a flawed technology.

I know :), I'm just hoping that Audi aren't claiming something fancy sounding like "a single rotor based on "technology" from the German motor company NSU" rather than just calling it a Wankel/Rotary engine.

    Seems like marketing doublespeak.

Audi use fancy technology marketing speak? Never.

    Vorsprung durch Wankel

And if you don't understand most of that German, it's about an Audi A1 hybrid wankel / electric car to be introduced by '13
