Where else could I post this but in the roads forum :D
The council has allocated 410,000 euro for this year’s work on the R259, a project that received all-party support from councillors in the Glenties Electoral Area and other areas.
The road stretches 6.6 kilometres from Crolly to the airport. A further substantial allocation would be needed to improve the entire road, but Cllr. Alcorn said the areas prioritised for this year include the stretch from Meenaleck to the Ranafast crossroads, a section near the bend at the Annagry factory and the junction of the R259 and the airport turn-off.
I believe it is one of the most important roads in west Donegal and I would be very hopeful that we’ll be able to get funding for it for 2012,” Cllr. Alcorn said.

by well established donegal cc standards this'll be done in three month bursts over 3 years as funding is located...

Where else would an airport be developed when the roads to it are so shocking

Flattest non-boggiest land available in west Donegal. Its a sant isthmus to a former island (dunno how long ago, but the closed national school has a "Carrickfinn Island National School" plaque on it).

Basically the cheapest place to build it.

They did the northern bit of it, oddly they did the southern bit of Inver Ardara at the same time ( only a few miles west in parallel) ....has they diverted that cash to the R262 it could be a fine road along much of its length by now.

First they should do Mountcharles to Inver...all 2 miles or so of it. Lethal stretch that. Even with Varadkars limited vision that short stretch of road is not acceptable.

Yes this road needs a serious upgrade. It's one of the worst regional roads in the country that is used heavily to get to west donegal. Your cars suspension gets a good testing on it. Funnily enough the upgrade towards Glenties is fairly good, if they could do the same with the rest of the stretch then it wouldnt be so bad. I cant see it happening for another few years although some resurfacing is badly needed.

Ended up up here today. The next section of the R262 to be done is now in such bad condition the council were out reconstructing the ditches and doing some patchwork. The road surface is being eaten by the bog in areas...
