Air Corps plane markings in 1950s

I'm doing a research project and something I would very much like to know relates to the Irish Air Corps.

Can anyone tell me what the colour scheme/military markings of planes flown by the Air Corps were in the 1950s, specifically about '56 /'57?

It's mainly single engine, two seater aircraft I have in mind, though I presume all aircraft of the period used by the Corps would be similarly presented.

I understand the colours were different from the present day Air Corps.

I'd be immensely grateful if anyone on this forum could let me know. Thank you.

Well there is a book on the subject. Find it here. It' an excellent reference generally. Not sure which aircraft you're interested in but they are all there.

Also check out the decals section. You'll find the colour schemes of all Irish Air Corps somewhere in the decal section.

Essentially though the two seat trainers of the period were the Chipmunk and Percival Provost. Both were painted silver originally with green and orange Celtic bosses and later with a Green, White and Orange boss. The two colour boss is probably the one you're looking for.

Also in service at the time were two seat Spitfire Tr9s painted overall green. exactly like this:

Many thanks for that Xflyer. I was wondering too if trainer aircraft like the Chipmunk were also used for "spotter plane"/search activity in association with the Gardai. I must have a look at the book you suggest.

Well it's a plausible use. Whether it actually happened is another story. But the Chipmunks were used generally in a variety of little jobs over the years. So why not? Are you thinking of an actual incident or some kind of fictional storyline?

Their replacement the FR 172s were and are used as spotter aircraft. But they arrived in the seventies.
