Impact on Insurance of changing from 1.3 to 1.5?

    hi guys,

I'm looking at selling my VW Polo 1.3 and getting a Nissan Almeria 1.5! I was hoping to get a 1.4 but that is near impossible to get, can anyone take an educated guess at how big an impact this would have on my insurance? Do they jump, add a few euro on or is it totally at the discretion of the insurance provider?

I'm 22 and with Quinn Direct if that information helps?!

It depends on what bracket the almeria is in, if its a higher bracket maybe itll be a few extra quid. But i dont think they're considered a boy racer car so it shouldnt be so bad.

Very little impact if you look around. Don't be so hung up on minute differences in engine cc. Most insurers don't care that much.

There shouldn't be much difference if any on those cars, only I would see is if the Almera is worth 3 or 4 times the price of the Polo it may ad €50 or so to it.

I dono..I'd check. Sometimes they can be ****heads about that kinda thing. they defo charge you extra.. could be anywhere from 50 - 200 extra. I'm 29 an I just got hit for 60 for changing from a 1.2 - 1.4 and Ive only 3 months left on my insurance. no points..5 years clean driving and never had a claim or accident

Engine size isn't the only consideration for insurance, so just call and check.
For example I briefly had a 1.3 94 toyota starlet to fill in when my former daily runaround 96 bmw 318tds was laid up for 2 weeks while i was messing about sorting out the changing of interior, turbo, brakes and a load of bushings (took ages due to lack of time/enegry and then some lazyness), the quote i got for a year for the starlet was almost 140 more for a year than the bmw (which is diesel yes but still 1.7 as opposed to a 1.3), out of interest then i checked a few other things against it such as a 316i which was still cheaper than the starlet (in my case anyway), a 1 litre polo was exactly the same price as the 318tds, and a 1.1 fiesta was only approximately 115 cheaper then the 318. In fact most small cars made little or no difference in terms of cheaper insurance cost in my case when spread over the course of a year.
But at the moment i'm going to have to consider changing insurance company or changing my car as my 1.9 diesel passat is costing me more to insure than a volvo 2.4t awd estate or a Subaru legacy (only just), which should have been far more if it was just down to engine size or performance. the damn passat seems to have got an awful bad doing for insurance

When I changed from Primera 1.8 to Mazda6 2.0 they increased my premium by 8%

I often wonder about other peoples insurance quotes. I drive a very large 3litre v6. I'm 28 with 5 years no claims and 4 penalty points. I pay €500 third party per annum. I would have thought that the difference in me insuring a 1.2 or a 1.4 would be close to zero.

That amounts to a €240 increase for you. They are taking the piss as they all do. Just tell them you'll go eleswhere. Every time I've gotten a renewal its been 30-40% higher than some other company. When the current insurer this they usually bring that down to a 10% difference just for asking. I still changeover though.
