    Hi,
I'm fixing a friend of mines laptop the dc socket was faulty and needs to be replaced that's not the bit i have trouble with. When i opened the laptop there's black hard foam like stuff around the socket (to hold it in place i figure because its not attached to the motherboard)

I was just wondering what is it? because I'm going to have to replace it when i put the new socket in.

    Many thanks for your help

It just sounds like the black rubber or plastic surrounding the jack and should slide upwards and out or it maybe a previous repair job where someone built around the jack for support, I havn't come across what you describe before?

Does the socket work if you 'wiggle' it a little?
If so, it's probable that one of the solder connections to the board is broken and what you mention was used to limit movement and maintain connection.

Thanks for the help so far i asked the question because i didn't know what it was either and had never seen it before ha. Its definitely not rubber and it doesn't move at all it's hard it looks like expanding foam or something but the socket has never been repaired or changed before:confused:

I'm changing the socket because you have to wiggle it to get it working but the problems not on the board because its not soldered direct to the board it has a plug on one end which goes to a socket on the board. The fault is definitely in the socket part because i can see where the wire has burned.

I'm getting more and more confused by this ha

Careful cutting with a scalpel to get rid of the foam and then concentrate on the housing, once cleaned up you may have to use some bonding to keep new dc jack in place.

Yeah that sounds like a good plan of action. It wasn't the getting it out i was worried about it was more what to replace it with to hold it in place when its gone ha
