    Hi Guys,

Complete idiot here, I thought I could simply re partition my linux drive to remove linux yesterday (Installed about 6 months ago and used it once). I reformatted the free space but when I turned on my laptop this morning it said Error with GRUB??

Has anyone had this problem before I was googling the issue and it said to burn the Windows vista recovery disc and it will fix it?

Anyone got a step by step? Much help is needed :(

GRUB is your bootloader - the thing that lets you choose what OS to boot.

If you just need to fix Windows so that it can boot, you can use a vista Recovery Disc to get things back to normal.

If you want/need to keep both your Linux install and Windows working, you'll need to fix Grub and then set it so that it can boot Windows. Probably your best bet there is to boot from a live disc for whatever version of Linux you were running and look for further instructions from there.

    Thanks a mill guys,

Gonna tackle this once I get home, I am hoping that I can do it from a recovery disk, gotta make one of them first, ya can just download the software and burn it to iso am I right?

I dont want linux back on my laptop as it is just taking up space. Is it as simple as inserting the recovery disk and following the steps? will this erase any of my data?

best tip i can give noobs, if yer gonna remove linux, FIRST fix the windows mbr, this will overwrite grub with the original windows file, so you vcan boot straight into windows this small app can do it for you EasyBCD...scroll down page there is free for personal use version, then your free do delete partitions and have windows reclaim them

How do I allow my c: drive to take up the free space from the linux deleted space? I Left it as free space and tried to resize my C drive but it is coming up in grey and cant be selected? any ideas?

Is the partition still present and not deleted ..... thus it is not free space?

Delete the partition and the space will then be free for use .... to be added to another partition.

Might be better to consider formatting the partition to NTFS and using it to store you personal files.

it's probably still formatted as ext3/4 and windows can't recognise it...

you could use the Live CD again and go into gparted and just delete the partition and when you reboot into windows you should be able to "extend" the C drive to take up the now empty space on the disk...

alternatively you could use easeus partition manager which is a decent enough program that should be able to recognise the ext file system and let you format it....

not sure exactly how you extend the C drive because I haven't used windows in ages... but you could always just turn the empty space into a NTFS filesystem and just use it as storage space

    hope that helps :)

Im on 7 here but if you go to start>type: administrative tools>comp management >disk management > you should be able right click your linux partition(s) and "delete volumes", when you have free space, you can right click the windows partition and expand it
