Groaning sounds coming from the steering

There has been a horrible groaning sound coming from the front wheels of my peugeot partner when I am maneuvering slowly(into my driveway for instance), also some times the steering makes a bang when I make a turn, it's like a thud and doesn't happen all the time. I thought that worn drop links could be the problem with the groaning sound, but I don't know what the thudding sound could be. Has anyone got any suggestions what could be causing these awful sounds?

Would it be low on power steering fluid, or pump on the way out?

The last time I checked the steering fluid level was fine. Would these sounds suggest a dodgy steering pump?

Damaged or worn shock top mounts can cause what your describing.

Get someone to turn the wheels while you listen around the front wheels to try to trace where abouts the sound is coming from.

Ok, what about the steering pump? do you think there could be a problem there?

Failing PS pump usually cause a whining noise, no knocking.

The steering rack itself or top mounts would be the likely cause assuming both noises are connected.

Obviously you could possibly have one thing causing the knocking and another problem causing the groaning noise.

Great stuff, thanks for the help. I'll go and have a tinker around.

Broken coil spring is quite common on these
