    I have a three year old black Macbook and I'm looking to install a new internal hard drive, really need the extra disc space.

    I'm looking at these two;

    http://www.macupgrades.co.uk/store/p...roducts_id=634

    A few questions;

    1. Will there be much of an increase in noise, heat and vibrations stepping up to a 7200rpm HD? I can find nothing but conflicting stories on various Mac forums.

    2. The second option is a hybrid SSD. What are the advantages/disadvantages of this over the first option. My main requirement is disc space for movies, tv, music etc.

    3. Installation seems to be very straight forward. Once I have the new HD in the machine do I just need to run the start up disc and install from a previous backup?

    An input would be much appreciatedsmile.gif

    I just updated my mac mini with a 7200 rpm drive with 16mb cache. I used memoryc.ie. From research it seemed the hybrid ones had bad longevity. Samsung or WD were most recommended brands. Heat and power consumption will increase but will not kill your mac. Do allow for vents to cool though. Back up to TM first then put in new drive, insert original Snow Leopard disc and choose Restore from Time Machine. Was fine for me. It's sometimes a good idea to a clean install of the OS though to clear any glitches and then use the TM restore apps and data only

    you could save 10-15 euro and have if you buy here for the second one at Elara or here Dabs.ie

    and you'll be supporting an irish company if you choose elara as well... just my 2c

    basically any hard drive is going to be the same - 7200rpm vs 5400 meh.. not sure you'll really notice a huge difference for day to day use... benchmarks may say there's better performance but in day to day stuff your not going to notice a difference tbh... maybe a tiny bit but nothing worth talking about...

    you'll only notice the difference if your doing heavy media editing and at boot up - and you have the extra worry about it over heating.. I haven't a clue what sort of cooling system is in your laptop so...

    as for the hybrid Wikipedia does a decent enough job - tbh I wouldn't really be too pushed but I haven't used one to speak from experience.. my main concern would be the shorter life expectancy because your using flash memory... but I'd wait on advice from other posters who may have actually used one before

    conclusion - the second one is a decent enough one but just buy it from a site other than the one your quoting to save yourself a few euro
