If you're not going to pay that much for rent then don't look at any of the student accomadation around the I.T. It's very poor quality and very expensive.
Check around and see if there's any house sharing or anything. Apartments at Citygate are rumoured to be quite cheap,it's about a fifteen minute walk to the I.T.
There's an excellent gym at the college, not sure about martial arts there, but plenty of clubs around town.

In town,if you're into going out Sligo's a great spot during the college year. The Leitrim being the popular pre night club spot, shots are about a quid. There's the usual craic then. Cinema, two shopping centres, football pitches at the I.T,snooker and pool hall in the Belfry amongst others.

True. I was looking there,Citygate would work out about 75 a week with 2 people sharing.
There's one here on Pearse Road(about a 25 minute walk or 10 min cycle) at 600 with 3 bedrooms,so if you could get two people to share it would be about 50 a week.

Best thing to do is take a day to go to sligo and visit the estate agents, tell them how much your willing to spend and see what they have to offer, not necessarily telling them your a student can help them to trot out a better pony...
generally though the best deals can be got if your sharing, there are quite a few of the newer apartments around the place empty recently and I know market yard has a few empty flats which is nearly in the town centre.

    see the lists here http://www.itssu.ie/accommodation/

havent checked how up to date it is, but if you give them a quick phone call they are generally pretty good at helping get accommodation sorted.

Apparently there're rumours that the gateway complex beside the campus is in liquidation though they seem to be still accepting bookings. Again best to check with the SU, and if they dont know, the guy that runs gateway is called Vincent and is pretty sound so he wont mind if you give em a ring to double check
