Hoping to get some tips on Murvagh as I'm due to play there soon. Hear the course is a brute in normal conditions and even worse when the wind gets up. Any info that be passed on would be most appreciated

    An excellent course.

The 5th to 8th is one of the best stretches in Irish golf (5 and 8 especially).

If you check out the website you will get a guide to all the holes on the course tour section which will help you.
A little tip I would ask you to follow is to leave your driver at home at this time of year. That might sound ridiculous for a course of 7400 yards, and everyone wants to whack a driver down those long fairways, but the rough is let grow high for the summer months and anything going in there is not coming out more than 50 yards thus ruining your scorecard. And its not hard to hit GIR with a 3, 5 or 7Wood, it would just mean hitting the green in 3 instead of 2 on holes such as 1, 6, 8, 11 and 13.

The course is in metres but I use yards myself for some reason. The yardages are prob away of I just do not have a stroke saver on me as I am away for the week.

1st - 2 bunkers on both sides of fairway c.220 yards down the fairway. Get through these and if your confident with the driver go straight over the right side one. You will see another bunker c.150 yards on ahead on the left and just get your ball past this to leave a SW, PW into the green. Large bunker in front of green a little blind so be careful.

2nd - Bunker c.180yards on right side, if you get ball past this its an excellent shot (always into a huge wind). Green clearly visible from here, bunkers on left and a blind bunker on right over the little mound so make sure you hit the green dead centre or lay up for a short chip which is what I do.

3rd - short par 3, bunker front left so just avoid that.

4th - Bunkers ahead to the left and right (c.200 yards) just aim through centre of these or again with the driver go straight over the one on the right side which leave a nice easy approach to the green. Bunkers on right so be a little careful not to put it out there.

5th - Make sure you hit the green or hill to the left of it if you want to get away with a par. Huge bunker in front of the green which cant be seen and another to back right which cannot be seen.

6th - Hit the first one up the fairways as far as you can and you could leave yourself a shot into the green in 2 for an eagle chance. A very big bunker is in front of the green which cannot be seen until your on top of it so if you go for it in 2 and worry you might not carry it, aim for the extreme left or right of the green.

7th - You will see a white target away ahead in the distance (centre of green) Keep the ball right on your tee shot and this should give you a visible shot into the green.

8th - As far up the fairway as you can, same with 2nd shot (blind and you will see a target on top of hill). If you follow this target you will not lose you ball and you should just be short of the green or on top of the hill at the 100metre marker

9th - Big bunker visible from tee about 220 yards down the fairway - another blind one about 150 down the fairway on right hand side so either clear the one in the fairway or lay up of it. Bunker to right side of green so once again centre / left of the green.

10th - Dog leg left. A big shot here over to the left can leave you a SW / PW into the green.

11th - Be very careful. Two bunkers not visible from the tee about 240 yards down the fairway which swallow up most visitors tee shots. Be confident you can carry 240 or use a club that goes 200 down the fairway. Use extra club for approach to green as its a lot more raised than what you will think from fairway. No danger around it unless you go long into the hill.

12th - Straight down the fairway as far as you can. Avoid bunkers all of which are visible. You will now see a drain ahead. Carry this or lay up. Green very well bunkered to front left, front right and right if memory is correct so make sure you are not short or right.

13th - Score Index 18 (totally wrong) c. 160 yards par 3 with bunkers to left and right. Not the biggest green so not too sure on its hole rating. Make sure you hit green.

14th - You will see a bunker about 220 yards up on the right side just beside a dune, just left of this is target line. Be careful on 2nd shot as their is a drain up ahead so either be sure you will carry or lay up which will give you a wedge into the green. Deep bunkering around green all visible so be careful.

15th - Keep tee shot to right side of fairway to give you maximum visibility into the green. Bunker to front right of green so avoid this.

16th - c. 240 yards par 3. No danger around the green its just the distance which makes the hole hard.

17th - Easiest imo and hit the ball as far up the fairway as you can to give yourself a wedge into the green. Bunker in front of green so make sure to avoid this.

18th - Look through the dunes and you will see the green about 360 / 380 yards up ahead. Position is paramount here and you want as much distance and to be as central as you can. Awful, awful bunkers to front left and front right which have to be avoided so you want as easy an approach shot as possible.

That will give you a rough guide but like I said check the website and for 5€ buy the stroke saver. On hole such as 11 and those two hidden bunkers it would be a godsend.

What a course! From the 5th to the 8th is absolutely fantastic, it's really a good fun course to play. Favourite holes being 5, 6, 7,8, 12, 14, 18. I know people highlighted the front 9 with the stretch from 5-8 but the back 9 are terrific. Must agree buying a strokesaver is a must.

It sure makes it a lot easier to hit a low score as I said those two bunkers on 11 are just cruel if you do not know they are there, amongst other little surprises. The stretch you highlighted is the most popular on the course, with my own preference being 14 - 18. I hope you got good weather for it and that you played to your handicap.
