Icing a Wedding Cake

    Hello,

I have a lovely mammy in law to be baking our wedding cake. However, icing is proving not so easy. I have been quoted what I think CRAZY prices.

If anyone can advise if there is somebody in the Galway area, who enjoys icing cakes as a hobby, or who are professional but don't cost the earth, I would be thrilled if you could let me know.

    Thanks

The most expensive part of a wedding cake is the time taken and the costly icing and almond paste, not the cake ingredients, so that is why any quotes you may have gotten might seem expensive.

Your best bet is probably a hobbiest, but if you find one make sure your hotel/venue doesn't require the cake maker or decorator to be HSE Registered, as most hobbyists aren't, and many hotels require this nowadays to cover themselves in the event of an issue with the cake (most commonly a foreign object or traceability issues as opposed to any food poisoning etc).

Our cake shop charges 90% of the cost of a wedding cake if you supply your own cake(s). They say the icing and decorating is the part that takes all the work, not the baking of the cakes so that's probably why it's so expensive. You only save 10% of the cost which seems really low although I do see their point too.

could you not just get ready rolled icing and do it yourself?

its not difficult, sure you probably ice your own christmas cakes and the ready rolled is some much easier then that

My sister did that with ours and the result was amazing!

It obviously took a lot of time and effort though and online research. So it's whether you want to put in the effort or spend the money? I think it meant much more to us that she did it herself rather than spending a fortune (although I'm sure she still spent over 100 on the whole thing)
