My accounts are all positive, only 1 closed and 1 limited.

Ive been lucky enough to be involved in 3 gambles, and the 3 of them came off, take that out of the equation, and I would be nowhere near profitable. Information is key in my eyes.

Worked in the industry on and off for 10 years. Im nowhere near profit.

    Golf - Profit since 2007
Football - Profit, although 09/10 season had poor loss
GAA- Profit, but only ever do few bets a year
    Boxing- same as GAA

Horsing Racing - Loss Loss Loss every year and have now given up on it except odd tip in here from some good knowledge but that's rare

I keep records of all my bets for last number of years..I am not big gambler anyway money wise. I have made profit every year since I have kept records because I play to my strengths now and still learning. I also do go into research for my bets not something do for hours, but wont have bet for sake of it..

I see gambling as hobby where try make few extra quid, but no fear of Paddy Power ever having sleepless night over me either that's for sure.

However I do have high expectations on my bets all the time hate loosing(but except going have more defeats then winners too) sometimes that can be good thing especially when I never try to get it back, now just move on till next thing I fancy value wise.

Definately down overall for the last few years. Had a decent win at the end of last season which made me break around even for the season. Have now closed my online account(looking for mortgage in a year or so) and will be just visiting the bookies once a week for a €20 bet on the footie.

Definitely down the last year or so, use to do great and make profit.
I'm not sure what it is but I can barely pick a winnin bet at all anymore.

I'm definately down but I bet what I can afford, although not by much in football as I usually have an accumulator or 2 click during the season.
Everything else I'm definately down but I have limited my betting to big events now just for the interest.

Won money, lost money on stupid things. Definitely down overall, trying to think things through more before putting them on now and betting on things I know.

    I've got a positive balance ! bar2-l.gifbar2.gifbar2-r.gifclear.gif9 27.27%

    I think I'm about even ... or something close bar3-l.gifbar3.gifbar3-r.gifclear.gif6 18.18%

    Lost a few bob overall
    bar4-l.gifbar4.gifbar4-r.gifclear.gif18 54.55%

I'm really surprised at the poll results to be honest, over 25% of people in profit. Considering the % of Betfair accounts in profit and the fact that 99% (at least) of betting office dwellers are losing overall that a really startling figure. We either have some really really shrewd punters or a load of bullsh1tters.

Can you clarify what percentage of Betfair accounts are in profit?

And also some evidence on the 'fact' in your post please.

At a Betfair trading training seminar in Cork a few years back the Betfair folk reckoned that less than 3% of accounts were in profit. They also said the majority of that 3% were trading before the off.

Regarding the betting shop fact I put forward, I have no figures to back that up but if you don't think it's true I'd be interested to hear what percentage of betting office dwellers you reckon are not making a loss overall :). One in a 100 being profitable overall in my opinion is an exageration to be honest.

Seems as I have no evidence my comment can of course be ignored if you so desire.

The 3% Betfair is interesting, I would have thought it to be a lot higher, considering its where the 'serious' punters hang out, with back to lay and all that.

Considering that, (presuming) 3% is accurate, I would think you are correct or very close with your 1% of shop punters. Theres surely a higher percentage of profitable accounts with Betfair, opposed to shops.

I asked for evidence as I thought it was misleading saying at least 99% was fact, which I'm sure you can understand?

You must also consider that perhaps people who have negative accounts will have ignored the poll, as admitting they are at a loss can be a problem, same probably goes for some who selected that they are even, or thereabouts.

Edit: I am in not claiming to be a top punter myself or anything, if you take away 3 bets from my gambling history I would definatley be down a good bit. This thread has got me thinking about that, and as a result my gambling will definaley be reduced significantly.

Cant say the bookies but its popular one which my mate works for and he says about 6-7% of people are in profit from online accounts...

He says their main money comes from shops...

From working in bookies before for few summers people who spend day and night in bookies are down even with inside info..

    I do "in-play" football. I have a losable non-rolling weekly budget of €20.00. If I don't see something I really fancy I don't bet.

    I am ahead.
