Does anyone know the relevance of a call being made to emergency services from an iphone?
Does it make it easier for emergency services to track?
It just seems strange for the news report to name the make of a phone

Word count filler I'd imagine. I know there are some emergency call systems where the phone can sent GPS information as part of the call data, but I don't think Ireland uses this system (through I stand to be corrected) though at that any GPS enabled phone should have compatibility.

Google send my coordinates. And there are a few apps for just this eventuality, there have been a number of people rescued quickly by relaying their coordinates from their iPhone.

It's not mentioned in this story, but it has been mentioned previously. One incident of a heart attack on a kayaker was replayed to the Coast Guard by the victim's wife who sent her coordinates from an iPhone in a waterproof pouch and the speed of recovery almost certainly meant her husband's survival.

Apparently the guy used his iPhone to establish and inform the emergency services of their location. Could be done by almost any smartphone.

In reality, he shouldn't have been relying on his phone anymore than a mariner should. However, given that the plane was a microlight his phone was probably the most sophisticated electronics on board!
