Using uTorrent in college?

    Hey,

Anyone got any tips for configuring uTorrent to work in college? It does seem to work (not totally blocked), but only connects to the odd seed/peer every so often just for a few kb.

    Thanks

become an IT student, think they're able to use torrents in their computer suites. might be wrong about that though. not a big user of torrents myself, but can you change the port that uTorrent uses? never used that program so don't know if that'll work

best alternative is to use direct downloads instead eg rapidshare/megaupload. i get great speeds off megaupload in the college, regularly ~2MB/s as a free user off both the computer suites and wifi (library/IT building usually).

probably less hassle if all those "Linux ISOs" you want are uploaded there >_>

I am an IT student! :p I'm interested in running it wirelessly on my laptop though.

Yeah haven't really gotten into the Rapidshare thing yet. Get great speeds with torrents at home.

The relevant ports in the ISS firewall appear to block them, yes.

And you call yourself an IT students and can't get around it? Joe Joe Joe...

Well torrents are fine. It's the shady material that poses the problem. Bound to be covered in the policy you agreed implicitly upon registration.

BTW, just to point out: universities receive notifications when people on the network have downloaded dodgy crap illegally and are expected to go poking. Just keep that in mind.

Haha I'm just bring lazy! I'm sure I could figured it out if I try!

Ah now who said anything about illegal material, it's a legitimate method of sending/receiving files...

Indeed. Doesn't a siren and red light go off down in ISS? :pac:

Do I sense sarcasm? :p Well if they've set a filter on their email to that effect, then yes! A reply is demanded for every instance of detected infringement (which is quite detailed).

I somehow doubt they can go peering into split rar archives.

Deep packet inspection and/or honeypots. That is all.

Torrents are easy to track though. The film/music/tv companies monitor the shared files and can alert the university's ISP (whoever that is) to that some of its IPs are illegally sharing files, though they probably don't care given the court case UPC had this year (i think)

I doubt ISS care or do too much about illegal downlaods given that you regularly see people in the computer suites watching the latest tv shows off megavideo...

    >_>

    <_<

    Even if it's all SSL?

If you've forced SSL encryption on a torrent then very unlikely.

To be clear - I don't know much about torrents. I don't use them except for when the new version of Ubuntu comes out. I think it's good to seed it as much as possible for the first day or two. The Canonical servers usually die for much of launch day.

I meant for direct downloads, like a split rar archive over rapidshare.

    Possibly.

I'm waiting for the day when they install their own RCA certs on all the PCs in the suites to snoop. Pretty much a MITM attack. Lots of businesses already doing it.
