Silly question here now (aren't they all)

My most recent time machine backup was done with Lion installed. If I change the OS back to Snow Leopard can I still retrieve data from the time machine drive?

Because you've backed up using Lion you won't be able to use Migration Assistant to migrate your apps and user account to a clean install of SL. It won't work. So afaik your only options are:

    - Restore to SL using a pre-Lion TM backup. You would do this by erasing your hard disk and using "Restore from Time Machine" in the Utilities menu of the install disc to select a backup from BEFORE Lion installed. This would restore your system to exactly as it was on that date. Any new data since Lion was installed would have to copied over from the TM drive manually. I'd only recommend this if you upgraded to Lion quite recently or don't mind losing recent changes.

    - Or you could just do a clean install SL and copy everything over manually. A lot of hassle but probably the better option.

    Why are you downgrading?

Work VPN uses Samba for filesharing and I can't see any of their drives

You can install Samba on Lion using MacPorts. It involves quite a bit of Terminal work though.
