Can't open S-Max tailgate

The tail gate of my s-max is jammed shut. Using the remote or pressing the tailgate switch results in a click but the door remains jammed. On a couple of occassions recently when I went to open the door it clicked but remained shut and it required a couple of go's with remote fob/switch to get it to open. Anyone any ideas what is causing this and how can it be resolved? Is it a DIY job or another call to garage?

    Thanks

The vast majority of times I've seen this on mpv's/estates there is something(shopping bag etc) getting stuck in the latch.

Thanks for the comment and for other comments on this. I wish there was something stuck in the lock but I was in the boot checking it out last night and couldn't find anything causing a problem. I read elsewhere that this can happen with s-max's and sometimes can be released by jigging a screwdriver around in the locking mechanism - you can about see a part of the lock from the inside - However, after much huffing and puffing and probing (at the lock:)) to my disappointment nothing happenned. I then sprayed the lock with WD40 and waiting till morning but again nothing. Am I stumped? Would a mechanic be able to release the lock without too much bother or would I have to go to a Ford dealer?

    Thanks again

Not really in to this, just an idea, usually car boot you may open 3 ways, ...
    1. button inside car
    2. remote control
    3. boot lock... so wondering, does it have keyhole to unlock boot??? somewhere under badge or hidden / hard see somewhere in plastic in boot door. I was surprised , when after a year i discovered on my nissan (good while ago) that boot lock is under badge, just flip up, and here we go - keyhole.

Any way , good luck sort out.

Might this will helps - linkie

Thanks for the link. I tried that already - I was afraid I'd dent the metal or crack the plastic lower panel if I pressed any harder but no joy. Good point re: hidden keyhole - I'll have a look this evening and check the instruction manual - DOH! What is it about men and instructions:)

Problem diagnosed and solved thanks to the Doctor:) In my case it wasn't a simple sticking tailgate latch but a bust one. Anyway alls well that ends well.
