Spending two weeks driving around NZ, flying into and out of Auckland, any suggestions as to where to go/what route to take!?

Head north of Auckland to get a taste of real NZ.
90 mile beach, Cape Reinga and the Bay of Islands is a favourite of mine.

Rotorua for a bit of touristy NZ. Mud pools, maori nights http://www.maoriculture.co.nz/

Hawkes bay on the east coast of NZ is a wine region (if that's your thing)
with Napier retro buildings built after the massive earthquake in the early '30s.

I could bore you to death with things to do,
