The way I see it is, if you can afford to run a car like that it doesn't have to be a bargain.

It can't cost anything in depreciation anymore in fairness and in ten years time it will still be worth something. A collectors item for sure! A true German muscle car!! One of M's best cars imho.....

I looked at this car, its been for sale for many months now. Its pretty rough, plenty of dents and dings, alloys in bits, interior very tired. Didnt drive it as it was in too bad a state to consider.

Correct 19 actually but still! In my view though age is nothing in having a knowledge or appreciation of some fantastic and future classic cars. :D

Yeah why not? The hard top is an after market jobby that does not fold away. The soft top is always there, you just need to take the hard top off and store it somewhere when you want to use it!

I'm a BMW fan, I'd kill for an M5, but I couldnt afford any aspect of owning one. I think thats what he means by 'no thanks'...not for the car itself.

However, if I was to pay (as in, actually pay ;)) a figure like that for tax, it would, of course be on an M5 or something similar. At least, I think that's what he means!

I don't have any issue paying that amount of tax driving a car I love and you would have been paying the same on your 330. I get this from people all the time, 'how can you justify that', 'I could never do that, sure I only pay €156 a year', blah, blah, blah - on a car that depreciates by more each year than I pay in tax.

Oh I agree with your logic, if I was willing to pay 1500 on car tax, it would be on an M5 or similar. I can't afford to pay that much money on car tax, but if I could, I could justify 1500 for a car like that. I don't see why people spend a fortune to have marginally lower running costs, when you can buy an amazing car for small money.

My finances only allow me to have a car around the 2 litre mark, so the FTO suits me perfectly, as I've always loved them. Not a nice car to drive on a daily basis, so that's why I have a 'daily' runner as well.

Hopefully, in a few years, I'll be able to afford to run a decent engined BMW again, because the three I've had, have all been a joy to own and drive.

Whats not nice to drive daily? The FTO? Also how is having 2 cars cheaper to run and maintain than one great car?

I didn't say cheaper to run! The FTO is a horrible car to drive for anything over say...half an hour. Suspension is rock hard, its noisy, and I always got out stiff and tired. My mileage is relatively high and together with me wanting to preserve and restore the FTO to perfection, since its a pretty low mileage example, it made sense for me to retire it to be a weekend car. The FTO hasnt been on the road recently, and more than likely wont be again this year, so I'm not taxing it.

OP, I think its safe to say that the rule of thumb with an E39 M5 is that you can expect to spend 10K on repairs in the first 12 months.

If you approach a potential car with that in mind - and work backwards when its better than usual you won't go far wrong.

Superb machine, but needs seriously more TLC than a std BMW... if it doesn't have a flawless BMW FSH expect the worst.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,248 ✭✭✭Plug

They are some nice e60 M5's going for <€25000. Parts prices would be the killer in these though:(

That's great logic.. buy an M5 for 12k and factor in spending 10k on it in the first year.. So you're looking at around 25k including tax and insurance and not including petrol.

Pretty 'interesting' man maths there Fishtits.. :) Could get an e60 for that price!

without sounding too smart, theres a big big difference between an M5 and an FTO, the M5 can be driven all day every day without issues imo.

its a comfy cruiser all day until you press the pedal and it turns into a beast!

Good god, what sort of pie in the sky absurdity are you basing any of that on? If it was the norm that the E39 M5 cost EUR10k in "repairs" in the first 12mths (for which owner, every one of them or just everyone on this thread? :pac:) then it would be considered an untouchable joke of a car.

Ah but everyone knows the e60 M5 costs EUR20k in your first year instead.

You also need to factor the respray due to the car getting repeatedly 'key'd'. Then there are the divorce costs after the gangsta's visit you in bed at 3am, and the loss of your no claims when it is stolen and burnt out.

    Great car though.

800 euro service repair costs on the m5 were very conservative certainly averaging those costs over a number of years would surely have to be much higher than that unless you were very lucky
