    Hey,
Inexperienced car user here. Have a car which was left idle over a winter. started fine and was running for a good few months. recently the battery went dead. Jump started and drove to Kerry and back no problem. Car was used for short trips around Dublin, visit the folks etc.
I'm planning on a trip to Sligo friday and the battery is dead again.
So could I just jump start it again or do I need to fork out for a new battery.
The car is old but a new battery was bought approx 2.5 years ago.

    Cheers,
    CdeC

Battery lost charge during winter, try to recharge it until friday and see what happens. Batteries are expensive a charger should only cost around
    20 quid or so.

Your local motor factor will test it for you.

Normally, lead-acid batteries don't like being left for any significant length of time in a discharged or semi-discharged condition. OTOH, although unusual it's not impossible that it failed in such a relatively short time. I think you should have the charging system itself checked to see if the battery is being properly charged.

if the battery is over 2 years old and was left that long without charging then just get a new one dont bother buying chargers

    Hi.
If you are planning to use your car over the coming winter you would be best to buy a new battery, however I would ask the mechanic to check the battery that is in your car at the moment to see if it is knackered, it should take him a few minutes to do so.
