Do i need a new starter motor?

    Hi all,

Firstly i would like to apologise should this question seem "silly". My talents lie in area's other than cars :).

I have a 2002 Renault Laguna 1.6 petrol. This morning i went to start the car (inserted the key card and pressed start button) only to be greeted with a single click and the engine not turning over. A friend was able to get the car started with a push start. I have the following questions:

    1. Is it simply a new starter motor that i require?
    2. How much would it cost to install a starter motor (i have been able to source a second hand motor)?
    3. Is there any other problems that are evident from the details provided?
I only raise question 3 as i am aware Renault's often have electrical problems which can effect many area's of the car.

Many thanks for all your help.

Did you check your battery? Sounds like that could be flat

The battery is fine. Radio, lights etc working perfectly but thanks for your help.

It could still be the battery. Try with jump leads next time and see what happens.

Had a similar problem with a Renault years ago. It turned out to be the solenoid on the starter motor.
Was able to work around it, for a few days, by tapping the motor lightly with a hammer or by putting car in gear and rocking forward and back, ignition off of course. It would then start as normal.
Cannot remember how much it cost to fix but it was not a lot.

Had same problem at one stage, needed a new motor starter, mechanic bought a second hand one for 60 euro and and did the job for 60 so it came 120 in total.

That makes no sense at all. If its not the problem, you are throwing cash away and work be a fix, temporary or otherwise.

(Edit, I assumed you meant locate another starter. If you mean locate the one on your car to hit it with a hammer, I guess thats worth a try)

Sorry i was referring to locating the starter motor currently on my car. Sadly it is proving more difficult than i thought.

TBH sounds like the battery. Go to any motor factor and they will test it for you very quickly.

It's not the battery, have the exact same problem as the OP, Found the starter motor today and cleaned the switches connected to it, i had already replaced the card reader but it wasn't that
This is a common laguna mk2 fault, if the problem reappears my next thing to do would be get the starter tested(it's gonna be a b1tch to take out).

The fact that it wasn't the battery in your car doesn't necessarily mean that it's not the battery in the OP's car.

All the lights come on as the OP has said, We both own Lagunas with a common problem, I can guarantee you that it's not the battery, besides the OP has said that it's not the battery, the only reason people keep saying it is the battery is because they are not aware of what it could be ie they dont or have never owned a laguna mk2.

The solution to the problem lies within the clicking sound that the OP can hear, again IT'S NOT THE BATTERY

Could a Laguna with a failing battery not produce the same symptoms - the click, lights, radio etc work but engine won't turn over?

Lights would dim, car would attempt to start, this is not really helping the OP now is it?
I will report back in a few days to see if cleaning the switches works.
