Where to run in South Dublin

I'm going to be living out of a suitcase in Dublin for the next few months & I'm in the middle of DCM training so I was wondering would anyone have any recommendations as to where I could train. I'm hoping to keep off the footpaths as much as possible. I'll probably be staying near Beggar's Bush which is close to Ringsend Park & Sean Moore park, are either of these parks anyway decent for training ? Looking at that area with Google maps I noticed there is an athletics track beside the park in Ringsend , does anyone know if the track is for public use or if it belongs to a club ?

Belongs to Crusaders. You can use it on a pay per visit basis

that's Irishtown Stadium. Don't know what the story is about running in there

You could follow the Dodder to Bushy Park and keep your milage up and also see some of Dublin - if you don't like running around in circle in parks. While there is some concrete very few footpaths but mostly tarmac paths, a couple of major roads to cross but nice relaxed running.

This gets you as far as Dartry but there is a nice path as you follow the river

Irishtown stadium running track costs fiver per visit. You should also look at the run from beggars bush to the poolbeg lighthouse, going through irishtown nature deserve. It's about 8 miles there and back and will give you a good mix of terrains to deal with

A lap of Sean Moore is just over 1 km with a choice of Tarmac paths or grass. From the sandymount side of the park you have 2 choices, irishtown nature reserve or sandymount strand. The run through the nature reserve is nice, Tarmac and then trail. At the end of the reserve, you can continue along pigeon house road to the liffey's south wall. You can run along the beach at Sandymount strand, and further along strand road there is a grass margin and Tarmac again.
A out and back in loop around all this is about 6 miles in total.

Avoid Ringsend Park unless you want to get savaged by dogs :(

    4-legged dogs too :-)

Sean Moore park is handy for intervals, nice grass trail around it. You can then extend the grass trail to Irish town nature park which can be run on grass for the most part. That's about 3km. The run out to Pigeon house and the lighthouse is very scenic anytime of hte year.

You can also run out to Clontarf sea front. About 3km to get there from Beggar's Bush, then it's about 5km on grass. Out to Bull Island bridge and back would give you a 16km run, 10km of it on grass.

Else you could keep running onto Bull Island, along the trails there for another 5km on grass.

You could then run about 1km from Bull Island and into St Annes Park which has shed loads of trails. Or continue along the sea front on a decent tarmac surface which is away from the road.

If you're training for DCM, those options should cover most of longest runs and all on lovely grass.

Thanks a million for all the suggestions lads. By the end of October I'll know every little path around there like the back of my hand :)

    hey,

    few other places close by

    • Herbert park - up the road in ballsbridge - small but ok for laps
    • Along the canal - again not ideal with crossing bridges but might be suitable for short runs. You could easily head down the canal and across to phoenix park for a few of your long runs.
    • Sandymount strand is ok too if you run on the 'hard' sand as such
    • Run up to Ucd and do track sessions or use pitches also.
    trihead:)

Keep an eye on the Group Training Sessions thread too - some of them might be a bit further away, but running in a group for your long runs makes them a lot easier.

    +1 for UCD

And if heading out to the irishtown 'nature reserve' please be warned the the word 'nature' is merely used to describe the rats, seagulls and pigeons;)

I'd love to be able to join some of the long runs in the Phoenix park but I'll be back in Limerick each weekend. I usually have some sort of track session on a Tuesday so if there is ever a group session Tuesday evening in UCD I'd love to tag along.

There is about 10 loops on our club site.

Phoenix Park 10 mile is one of my favorites. I do my long runs there every Sunday. 95% trails.

I train with Sportsworld as well and Bushy Park is a nice place to run I find and you have a mixture of grass and tarmac to run on. There's a nice wee loop around the top of the park which is 0.7 of a mile according to my Garmin but you could easily stretch it out if you wanted. There's a few steep inclines as well if you're looking to punish yourself by doing hills :)

I also run in Deer Park from time to time. It's 1 mile exactly if you take the long loop around it. It kind of seems to break up the longer runs rather than doing more loops of a shorter course I find.

Just had a quick look at this thread to see how long it would last before dogs were mentioned. 7 POSTS. Which is to be expected. I run on the other side of town, and dogs are the biggest problem there.
Sooner or later, ( sooner probably ), there is going to be a major dog related incident in this town. Then our so called authorities will demand " A REPORT ".
