HTC Legend - where's the memory gone?

HTC Legend has a specified ROM of 512mb

1tap cleaner tells me i have 185mb of memory (it only cleared 2.6mbs of cache.)
21mb of that is free space
46.7mb is used by 12 applications that only install to the phone

photos/video/music apps are all set to store on the sd card

so, there's 442mb (or 118 according to 1tap) that I can't account for (probably because i don't know where to look...)

where's the rest of the memory used and is there anyway of cleaning it up so that i get access to that memory?

(rooting isn't an option for me, neither is buying a new phone)

Now are you talking application storage space?

because RAM and ROM are two very different things

Application storage space is what I'm primarily talking about, and I assumed RAM covered this. Right or wrong?

Nope ROM is where the applications are stored, But you see thats also where the OS is stored and the built in applications that come bundled with your phone. So basically thats where your space goes!

The Legend has about 130mb to work with after you boot the phone. The problem with this is that Davlik cache will take up an awful lot of that after you install apps. This is not wiped until the phone is reset I think

You need to root and install a rom with APP2SD+. Desire is the same.

so I should do a factory reset then? At this stage I'm down to 13mb, and I can't update apps, even some that have moved to sd card. Gmail has stopped syncing, presumably the memory is the issue.

I assume that the back-up, reset and restore process is straightforward? Can anyone recommend a back-up/restore app?

    thanks

MyBackup Pro is good, If you're Google Synced that *should* take care of your Contacts :)

Ya, it's very easy to do :)

i like the way you say should! think I'll buy the backup app - if it saves me having to replace the phone then it's €3 well spent.

    thanks

    results

    backed up with mybackup pro.
    factory data reset
available phone memory jumped to 155mb
    restored data - 153mb

restored apps - this is where it gets interesting :
after restoring and moving most apps to sdcard, i have 9 apps remaining on the phone = 35mb of memory
    I have 63mb free memory.

So what happened the other 55mb of space?

This may be common knowledge, but moving the app from phone to sdcard doesn't transfer all of the data. If i figure out how to do a screenshot I'll post some up, but 2 examples are :

Angry Birds : Storage on phone = 22.18mb Move to sdcard and the storage is reported as 3.15mb

    Evernote : Storage on phone = 6.6mb Move to sdcard = 3.09mb

I had a good few apps that i kept because i thought they were fully stored on the sdcard, and they were reporting storage less than 1mb. When moved back to phone, some jumped to over 6mb. I deleted most of them. Available space is now back up to 108mb.

I was having internal memory woes on my Wildfire S not too long ago and found a guide linked below and was nearly able to double the memory capacity to what it was, worth a shot on yours.....

thanks Fieldog - i was using apps2sd. It was because I was transferring the apps one after another that I noticed the difference in reported memory.

I installed an app yesterday where the memory on the phone was showing 4mb, but transferring to sdcard only 32kb was reported!
