    Hi All,
whats your opinion on beltex, thinking of buying a few pedigrees and breeding them on a small scale. Even to have the rams for our own use. we usually cross charollais rams on suffolk/mountain black face ewes so this would be a new venture.
    any feedback appreciated

Quote from a vet " Beltex are prone to dystocia and respiratory problems,"

Not sure if this has been discussed before? I have had quite a few Dutch Texel ( possibly the same as Beltex ? ) and have not lost any from respiratory problems. Have any of you much experience with Beltex?

Also wondering about Bleu de Maine. Reports on the british forums are critical of the breed. A couple of commercial breeders claim they are a good cross

was at Sheep 2012 on saturday and was impressed with the beltex but we don't sell direct to a factory and would not benefit from the kill out %.
saw a few blue de maine x and wasn't very impressed, blue faced leceister xcross on the other hand were very good.

    ..........

A guy from ICM NAvan told our discussion group that in his opinion Beltex were not an option because it takes so long to develope muscle...Kepak Athleague are suppose to be paying a producer 15cen bonus for supplying Beltex. A local guy bought a Beltex ram last year and intends to buy a second one this year he is so happy with them.

I have used Dutch Texel on big suffolk cross ewes and intend to keep a few of the ewe lambs as they have great shape.
ICM Navan were in Athenry at Sheep 2012 and were saying the market wants a lamb killing out at about 18.5kg i think....Will this bring about more demand for the butty Beltex X ?
