Hey, all currently driving a 05 Rav4 , fed up of €600 road tax and petrol of €35 a week - we do fairly low milage - 250km weekly on average.
thinking about a 08/09 Volvo S40 1.6 Diesel - any ideas? Are service / parts exprensive for this vehicle.
would welcome other alternatives for a small family car.

How much do you think it'll cost to change to the volvo?

€16k-€17k, minus whatever i get for the Rav4 , maybe €7k or €8k if im lucky...

Spending €8k to save about €520 (€10 a week) petrol and €450 motor tax a year at most isn't a good way to save money.

If it was me I would hold on to the Rav for 3 more years, there will then be plenty more of the low emissions vehicles for sale at a cheaper price, probably 50% of their price now.

Lets say it costs you 8k. And lets say your tax goes down to the lowest €104 per year and fuel down to €20 a week so your saving €15 a week on fuel(780 a year) and you save 496 a year on tax, that still means that you will have to drive the volvo for over 6 years before the saving on fuel/tax cancels out the 8k you spend.

I'm not saying you shouldn't change if you want a new car I'm just pointing out that changing just for the lower tax, like everyone is rushing out to do, doesn't make sense.

You'd be nuts to spend that money to save a tenner a week.

Best way to save money is to keep your current car for as long as you can

You should also consider that some of the newer diesel cars have filters on them which are not suited to low mileage driving as they clog up and so in your case it may be better to look at a petrol model also. You should google diesel particulate filter for more info.

As said already it does not make financial sense to change from the Toyota to a Volvo, however I do understand your reasoning for wanting to change. Therefore why not change using whatever you can get for the Toyota? Something like these perhaps?
