Every assembly line that allows cameras in is immaculate, you only have to watch the Megafactories series on National Geographic TV which has recently featured Lego, Heineken, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Bentley, Bugatti etc.

You never see a stray brown box or sweeping brush lying about the place and the floors are glistening clean. Every worker is a 'craftsman' or a 'technician', you'll never hear the word 'operative', all part of the deal they did with the TV company - you let us write the script and we'll give you access to make a cheap program TV with no actors.

I'm not so sure about that. I've been in both Alpina in Buchloe and Hartge near Saarbrucken and in both places you could eat off the floor. I've seen a video of Lamborghinis factory in the 80's and yes, stuff was thrown around but Audi changed a lot when they took them over. A number of line workers were sacked for percieved lack of quality and they probably changed a lot when they got in there.

You are right though, some places are just filthy, the photos below are from the TVR factories in the 80's and the 2000's, not the white dust on the tyres in both photos and the general mess of the places. The attitude may be one of the reasons why they no longer exist.

I'm sure they all have clean floors these days, if only for health & safety. What I meant by my comment is that the factory floor just looks too tidy, if you saw the odd brown parts box or a sweeping brush at the side of the assembly line it might make you feel that it wasn't an airbrushed job.

That said, the Megafactories series on NatGeo is very well worth watching, the place where they assemble the Bugatti Veyron looks more like a showroom in Monte Carlo than a factory, you really could eat your dinner off the floor.
