Just saw this on Ireland AM www.liedetector.ie

Aparently they're offering a polygraph for the knockdown price of €450 at the minute..

Would you avail of one if you suspected someone of cheating/stealing off you/lying to you etc?

I wonder will the ready availability of this service reek havok on Irish couples.. they say ignorance is bliss and all that..

    yes ...yes I would....or No..no I mean no!

(if the significant other etc was lying they wouldn't voluntarily do this anyway would they? + you couldn't force them...you'd need to trick them into it by lying to them)

Thing is though, lie detectors can't actually detect lies. The only thing they can do is take a base reading of parts of your nervous system that you can't control like heartbeat, sweating, body temperature and so on and then measure that against readings when you're asked questions. It can basically test if you're nervous or not and as a result isn't admissible as evidence in most places. For example if you were arrested and taken to a police station, that'd be enough to make you nervous which would result in a guilty reading, likewise you could be nervous that people won't believe you, which will again result in a guilty reading. It turns out a lie detector is only slightly more accurate than 50 / 50 chance.

Paul ekman wrote a book on the subject called "telling lies" which pretty much says that there's no good method of telling when people are lying at the minute and he's one of the best in the world at it, he was forced to write his book to discredit all the other books claiming to have fool proof methods.

Haven't polygraph tests been proven not to be fully effective?

No. If things were that bad I think I'd have to leave him anyway...

I might do it as a joke... if I had the money maybe. But then I've used those little hand lie detectors and it would zap me if I was telling the truth I'd be so nervous using it.

Micro expressions are a very useful indicator, even against a schooled liar.

Lie detectors have long been dismissed as a sham.

A few sensors to see how nervous you are that can easily be manipulated by the skilled subject and were never even reliable to begin with. So no I wouldn't bother with it

Very easy to cheat. Just clench your bum muscles during the control questions.

Now for those all important DNA results...

Why waste €450 on something you can download as an IPhone App for €1.00

I'd avail of a new partner if I was asked to do one.

Do they have something to stop your big toe from hitting a pin in your boot?

Yeah they mentioned that old trick alright.. they make you take your shoes off and you have to wash your hands to stop the old anti-perspirant on the fingers trick.
