Back to Education Allowance while on JSA

Hi guys ... just looking for a bit of advice

I've been unemployed now for nearly 2 years and just signed up to do one of the courses via the Springboard website.

There is a form that needs to be filled in by the local SW office to confirm you qualify and I went there last week to get it signed. While I was there the guy gave me a form entitled Back to Education Programme. He told me I just needed to fill it in so they know I'm back in college and drop it back.

    Fair enough.

Now I'm looking at the form and it mentions payment...I know there is a BTE Allowance but I don't need it - its an Open Uni course so no expenses..all materials etc are provided free. No transport costs etc etc.

I also don't really want it...I am on JSA and its taken me nearly 7 months to finally get that. I really cannot afford to be on another waiting list with no money coming in while I am assessed for BTE Allowance.

So my question is will I automatically be means tested for BTEA and if so will my JSA stop?

    Thanks a mil

If the course is covered under springboard, you won't be going on Back to Education Allowance - however the same form is used for Springboard and BTEA. You need to fill out the form and return to them - its an administrative scheme and your payment won't be affected.

How would social welfare know it was part of the springboard scheme or not? There is no where to state so on the form

Donegal - there is a box to tick on the form that says Part - Time Education option so I'm presuming if you tick that it knows it is for Springboard or something similar.

If it's a full time course, you can't be on JSA, because you can't be actively looking for work while on the course. You have to go on BTEA I think when you are on the springboard thing in order to keep your equivalent benifits + the extra you get. I got a form from them that I had to complete to transfer me to BTEA.
