Just an observation. The latest fashion trends are shorts, jumpsuits etc. Now I was out the other night and OMG

Seriously ladies do you not have mirrors in your house or do you just not care???? Some of the shorts were miniscule on legs that should really never see a pair of shorts at all! And the tiny dresses are the same - one girl was squeezed so tightly into a dress you could see the complete knicker line and they were very tight on her stomach!

Now you can lambast me for judging etc and should be able to wear what you want etc and thats fine but do you really not care what people think or say or do you just not look at yourself properly???

I do think people buy into trends without even thinking whether it suits them/is suitable for them.

I was in Dunnes yesterday and there was a woman pushing a trolley wearing what I thought were the worst fitting pair of floral trousers teamed with a dodgy looking denim jacket, got a full view when she was in front of me at the checkout and it was a jumpsuit under the jacket!

The problem in particular with jumpsuits is that a lot of women are different sizes on top to bottom - this woman was definately a 10/12 on top but a 12/14 on the bottom so the jumpsuit was loose on top and literally stuck to her ass:confused:.

I don't know, I'm all for wear what you feel comfortable in and feel confident in - but sometimes people really need the likes of Gok Wan to say - NO, YOU SHOULDN'T!

I'm all for wearing what you feel confident in...but seriously, some people really need to buy a bigger mirror before they leave the house.

I've lost nearly 2 1/2 stone and I've another couple to go before I'm at my goal. So many people comment on my outfits when I'm out because I dress in styles and fabrics that flatter my shape. I wouldn't wear the latest trends just cos they're 'in'.

Dressing for your shape makes you look slimmer...

Well at least Im not the only one then!!

Prime example. A girl on Sat night - she must have been about 18 maybe younger and a size 14 (same as me). She had these orange shorts on and wedge heels. Now grand - however they were silky shorts and very short and they had elasticated waist with her top tucked in. She looked terrible - but her skinnier mates had the same style on so she wore it too.

As Gok says just because its in fashion doesnt mean you wear it!!

It does depend who they are on. If the girl is a stunner and has a great body, then of course it'll look better. Now, the clothes themselves will still be ridiculous but she'll get away with it because of her looks. So when other girls wear these things they are probably hoping they are getting away with it too!

I was just saying it to my friend the other - it does seems to be the younger girls , under 20, who poor themselves in to "the fashion" whether they have the bodies for it or not.

It's at the stage where I feel like a granny when I go out wearing a dress that's a bit above the knee. I know I'm not slim enough to wear anything shorter, but I see plenty of girls a lot bigger than me wearing very short shorts and skirts. It's cringy.

We actually saw a girl wearing a dress in the pub last weekend that was just below her ass cheeks - she turned around and there was a slit in the dress and you could literally see a half moon, no underwear! She had a great figure, but that just made her look cheap and skanky.

well what my friends and i always say why don't these girls have friends who will tell them they look awful?

Like i would never let any of my friends out with their bum cheeks hanging out or something!!!

The worst at the minute is the daisy dukes. I'm a size 8-10 but have really fat legs so i know i can't wear them but i see so many girls in them that are just terrible looking!
    Why won't anyone tell them!!!???!!!

It's funny I was only commenting out last sat night on this very issue and the general concensus was: thank god for 90's grunge :)
Seriously though, some teens today think that all the 80's rehashed junk they are wearing is cool, but anyone over 23 should remember the original heinous-ness of yazz, dynasty and shoulder pads. However we all make mistakes, remember the skirt-over-trousers with stilt-runners of the late 90's? :D

Maybe it's true that there are no original ideas and everything's been done before, but I'm so glad I'm not a teen right now, as the amount of arse required to be on show now would never have suited me or my body!

Everyone's looking like a one-episode character from the fresh prince of bel air these days :P

Worse yet I saw this at a teenage disco - you know, where they're only 14-16... I spotted the queue as I was going to the cinema and this girl stood out... I was mortified... I couldn't imagine letting my daughter out like that.

Yeah, I often think about this. I can agonise over whether a skirt is too short before I head out, and I'm a size 8, but my legs aren't super-skinny. Then I'm walking into town and I see loads of girls younger than me and about 3 times as big wearing hot-pants and I think "I was worried?!"

I do wonder if they have mirrors. Or friends. I mean the skirts 6 inches above the knee are bad enough, but when you can see ass-cheeks under the jumpsuits it's just gross!

    !

Keep checking that mirror - dont be one of the statistics that we are discussing!! :D
Thing is its not even young girls (under 20). Have seen plenty of older ones who really should know better. Seems to be the mentaility of 'well my mate is wearing it so I will too' Yeah but your mate is half your size!!

Don't worry! I gave away two dresses I'm not comfortable in anymore to a friend who's 10 years younger :D My mirror and my boyfriend keep me clued in ;)

I find the whole obsession with trends bizarre. Now I admit I'm at the other end of the scale, I adore clothes, but never have been into whats 'trendy' so my clothes last and get pulled out of the wardrobe again and again. I'd liek to think I dress well for my shape, and I'm my own worst critic bigtime!

There's a couple of things that bug me about these trend slaves, I agree with the above, soemtimes, it just doesn't suit your shape, don't do it! Bit it's also so boring to see a group of girls and they're all wearin versions of the same outfit. They seem unable to think for themselves, and branch out even slightly!
The strangest thing for me tho, is the number of times I used to have these little skanky young wans slag me in the street for my choice of clothes, eg dungarees, doc martens, hippie skirts, and over time, as soon as the item becomes trendy, they're all wearin it, not even aware of what hypocrites they are! Ah, one of the joys of growin up, and becomin an 'adult', they don't comment on my clothes anymore! :)

    Like they invented it!

In town the other day saw a group of girls - all wearing the same colours. The cream and terracotta colours that are in penneys. They all had them on just different items. One of them had a long chiffon skirt on (nice skirt) and a cream bra top OMGOMGOMG!! My daughter is 18 and she was gobsmacked! I have never seen anything like it in my life - she was a hefty lass!! They were all in wedge heels that they couldnt walk in and the hairs were backcombed as much as possible! They thought they were only gorgeous - everyone was looking at them so I could understand why they thought that!:D

I see a lot of this where I live. Grand if you have the body to wear it and killer legs for a pair of short shorts (once their not indecent) but there are so many young girls and not so young!! That just wear whatever they pull off the shelf, regardless of it suiting them or not.

My sister is 16 and a lot of her friends go out wearing half nothing. I hate it to be honest, just because there is a lace bodysuit in american apparel doesn't mean you have to buy it and wear it out with nothing under it!!!

Granted some of them have a figure that could pull it off But some of them don't, especially for that recent cut off top trend showing half yer midriff!

I once saw photos of my sister on a night out. She had left the house wearing a gorgeous pair of studded stiletto boots with skinny jeans a creamy kind of flowy top and a black leather jacket. The photos showed her with just a lacey bra on under the jacket. :O like she looked well in the first place! I just don't understand the mentality of flashing as much flesh as possible! Needless to say she got a talking to from me and hopefully wont be going out like that again anytime soon :(

I hate this. I love the idea that there should be fashion staples in every girls wardrobe.

    Mine are
    Leather jacket (goes with everything)
Skinny jeans and a gorgeous pair of fit and flare jeans
    Blazer
    Black heels
    Pair of tailored shorts
    LBD

They are my favourite things in my wardrobe. I see so many girls with ill fitting clothes (and ill fitting underwear in particular bras....no I don't want to see that) It drives me crazy. I am the kind of girl that stares at the mirror after trying stuff on and twirls and considers stuff even more!

:( Maybe some girls can't be bothered waiting for the changing rooms...if pennys on a busy day is anything to go by!

sometimes I can't be bothered queueing, but ONLY if I know I can return the item if it doesn't fit. Otherwise, everything gets tried on, I'm soo picky about things fitting right!

I'm not entirely sure where this thread is going. I mean, anyone who leaves the house with clothes on, make up and hair done, ie has made a conscious decision as to what they look like, obviously cares.

What we're getting at here now is whether other people think they look ok. It's like "wear whatever you feel comfortable in, as long as it looks good"?

However, I do think there is room for conversation in the area of being a trend "slave", ill-fitting clothes, what are your wardrobe favourites and what do you hate about fashion (think we had the last one before already). I think this thread is jumbling them into something kind of mean.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,713 ✭✭✭✭Novella

I agree with Twee. I think this thread is sort of cruel.

It seems to poke fun at many girls under the age of 20 for desperately trying to fit in etc. Personally, I would have thought that typical for that age group - it being a time where being accepted is vitally important, well, it was for me anyway.

i think it's cool if someone sees a dress they love, thinks it's amazing, tries it on and realises it's not entirely flattering and then goes "**** it, i like it."
I wish I were more like that myself. I get really self conscious if something doesnt fit right, and wouldnt wear it , but then sometimes i see girls wearing something and it's not perfect and you can see a fat roll or an undies line, but they still look awesome and i think well kudos to them for having to confidence to wear whatever the hell they want.

i don't see why someone would be bothered by someone else's poor outfit choice though.. how does it affect you?! and fact is, a lot of clothes ARE made for "perfect" figures and a lot of women don't have these figures. Fashion is supposed to be fun and if you feel good in it, then who cares if the sight of your bare thighs or your muffin top offends someone else. screw them.

Agree with Twee, Novella & Vicecream, I completely understand the under 20's wearing horrific oufits, jeez it's only a couple of years ago for me and I wore some absolutely dreadful things! That's the joy of being that age, you're finding out what suits you and what you love. I never feel anything but an an (enormous) inward smile at how happy they look and how silly, and how happy & silly I looked at the same age.

Different deal entirely for people who are clearly wearing the wrong size, and maybe the wrong trend, I wish their friends would subtly hint, not to spare my eyes but to keep them from looking awful! I hope my friends would tell me if maybe short shorts weren't such a good idea ;)

Well, this is what I'm talking about. I don't care if someone follows every trend, or picks out the most bizarre outfit from Top Shop, or wears wildly clashing clothes and crazy styles. Your clothes - your choice. I don't have to like it, but I pretty much respect everyone's personal style.

What I am amazed by is the people in the latter part of your post. The people who can go out in skirts or shorts or jumpsuits that are way too short or small for fat thighs and with arse cheeks hanging out. Not only that, but that someone doesn't advise them. Or that they can look in the mirror and think it looks ok.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,091 ✭✭✭dearg lady

Seems like there's a bit of oversensitivity in this thread!
We all have opinions,a ll the time, on people we meet.
It's not unreasonable to comment on this. I find it bizarre that someone would choose to wear something unflattering, when they could choose to wear soemthing flattering to their shape and figure.

As regards people mindlessly following fads, I've seen people of all ages do this, not just under 20's,and yes I think people should think for themselves a bit more

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,302 ✭✭✭Cadyboo

I am not the type to really look at what other people wear when I'm out, each to their own and all that.
However I have to say that jumpsuits and short dresses and shorts being worn by someone do always catch my eye. Especially if their bums are on show. I can't understand why they need them so short, do they think that will get them a boyfriend?? :(
There are some girls who really follow trends. An old friend who I don't see much, only in pictures on facebook is one of these. She buys everything new in top shop and river island, She is not a slim girl and yet wears all these clingy dresses up her bum with cellulite and orange peel showing, shocking!
I wear my own style of clothes, I don't particularly like following trends as they go out of fashion, I like quality clothes that I can wear anytime.
On the under 20s girls, they wear what is in fashion because they don't know any different. We were probably like that ourselves when we were teens.
