    Rob

    Gonna ask the dumbo questions

In layman terms, what do you think the impact will be for non Dreambox owners going forward (hate that phrase...)?

Do you think its just the beginning - first the Enigma issue, and now the webif, Will there be more plugins/extensions targeted?

Do we talk of 'doom', or will everything be forced further underground, with the availability of open source for nonDM stuff becoming private?

    WW

Its a good question, The issue seems to be related to specific tpm checks that are used in various plugins etc to check that the plugins etc are being used on a Genuine dreambox.
Now with the Clone dreambox's, VU DUO and ET9000 plus a few other's that use Enigma2 as its software will also fall under this as these tpm checks are generally removed in order that the 'genuine dreambox' check does not occur.

So under the licence arrangements the author of the plugins etc can request either removal or to have the checks put back in ... this is basically what has happened.

So what does the future hold ....

Obviously DMM are taking a bit of a hit to their sales from the sales of clone boxes aswell as other broadcom based receivers and this may be just the start.

What will probably happen is we will see some new plugins developed from scratch that don't use any type of check or atleast we will see those plugins as an ipk which you will download yourself and install and have had the tpm checks removed. These won't be available via feeds but probably on forums as an independent package

Lets also add the fact that they base the software on Linux (free) rather than pay a licence fee to another operating system, but when it comes to things like this the coders get all protective ... If they didn't want it to be used in the first place they should have closed the source off ..

Agree with last point Rob, if people publish their code and let it be placed in various public repositories, then they should not complain too much - its sort of like bragging about what they can do with the std api's.

As regards the E2 code, is it tied to DMM, or is there an open source version?
I thought most code grew from the tuxbox project, or am I mixing things up!

According to the licence agreements, you can fork out a branch of enigma2 and modify it etc no problem ... so E2 will always exist or atleast E2 as we know although it could be called something else, but each plugin has an individual licence so each could be or not be used depending on the details of that Licence.
