Grafalloy Shaft Question

    Hi.

I was out playing with a mate today. He'd have a handicap of approx 22.
He has an average swing speed. Not too fast, not too slow.

I was looking at his driver (which he's very inconsistent with) and noticed his shaft was a blue Grafalloy shaft with the letter X on it. Does this mean it's an extra stiff shaft?
I was trying to explain to him that if it was, it wouldn't be suitable. I couldn't explain why as I don't know enough about why exactly it wouldn't be suitable. I just read that it was.
Can any of you guys help me out?
    Is it a stiff shaft?
If so, should he replace the shaft?

    Thanks in advance.

    Zak.

PS : The rest of his clubs have regular shafts.

Yes it does mean extra stiff, and the Grafalloy Blue shaft is stiffer than most anyway so it's probably not suitable for him at all

As I ( 28 h/c) understand, a slow swing will require a regular shaft was it will flex somewhat and give the user a power boost.

A pro with a regular shaft would be swinging too fast and the head may not always come square to the ball and thus he can't control where the head is. Thus a stiffer shaft is more controllable (a stiff shaft has flex but it is less than a regular shaft).

    Open to correction on this.

Tell him that unless he has forearms like popeye or whip like McIlroy he won't hit this club well.

My bet is that most of his shots are pushed / sliced and that the distance achieved is probably maxing at 200 yards.

You'll probably come back to me now and tell me that he can draw the ball with the club ;-)

well, the other day most of his drives were sliced...although he had a couple of hooks also....
his max drive the other day would have been around 220...

although i was out with him a few months ago, and he drove the ball very well!! So I'm confused!!
Maybe I'll tell him to go somewhere to get his swing speed measured.
Do the regular shops (McGuirks/American Golf) test your swing speed for free?
