my ordinary steel wheels on my 05 peugeot partner are in a bad state.there is a small bit of rust on the back ones but the front ones are nearly black from the brake dust and it wont come off.i was wondering which is better to paint or powder coat them,i have priced both and there isnt that much diffference.has anyone any experiences on which is the toughest coating
also wondering would changing tyres on them do any damage when there painted, coated

Powder coating is usually considered much tougher than spray paint, though spraying is probably the norm I suspect. Plenty of people would just tackle it themselves with an aerosol can rather than pay some one to do it, especially if a wheel cover or hub cap is fitted to reduce the visible paint area.

Changing tyres should not have any damaging effect on either coating if the tyre fitter does his job properly. Make sure he doesn't use hammer on balance weights as they can scratch the coating.

Surely for the money you'd spend on refurbishing your steel wheels you'd buy a nice set of alloys for not much more?

would 45 euro to paint/powder coat steel wheels be a lot cheaper than what it would cost for alloys ?? does this include taking the wheels off and putting them back on - inc. tire fitting and balancing ??

i looked at a few places on -line today but couldn't seem to get any kind of idea of prices.... that always puts me right off.

am going to get them sand blasted first, have to with the rust and the brake dust etching into the metal,i even used to work in a body repair shop during summers, but dont have the time and couldnt be arsed doing them myself, dont have compressor or spray guns, and the local paint store if i rember correctly, charges about 10euro for spray paint in cans:eek:

that is sand blast, prime and spray or powder coat, i dont think you get allloys and tyres for much less than 200 a corner and if second hand would probaly have to refurb them, also have a friend with tyre changer;)

thanks for the reply - and sorry for the confusion. i meant - if someone was to have their alloys sandblasted etc - would it be a similar price to this. 45 euro seems very reasonable considering the work involved.

    thanks again.

simonez spray paint is only a fiver a can. 2 cans would spray them. personaly i wouldnt go to the rounds of getting steel wheels sand blasted and powercoated for a van. you could pick up four reasonably good ones in a breakers for the price you would pay to get one wheel done if you dont have the time to give them a rub of a wire brush and a few coats of paint!
