RTE2 HD Sunday Game

Hi all, watching the games today in HD for the first time, all fine for the minor match with a cracking picture with so much more detail, then halfway through the pre match analysis for the senior match the picture lost its clarity all of sudden, basically went to SD pic, I still was unsure and checked other channels etc and yep it had, very annoyed to be honest. So patiently sat watching the game and around the 23 min mark int the first half, hey presto back to HD and what a difference.

Has anyone else notice this today, bottom line I can understand some initial teething issues but hope its not an on going occurence.

Did anyone notice how poor the picture was on Sunday Game on Sunday evening ??

Could playback of the HD picture from earlier in the day on what was obviously a non HD transmission have caused this ? Very poor !!

RTE really need to shift it on a gear - too many issues at this stage of the game.

Maybe they used a VHS tape from the archive to record the game, cutbacks etc. :D Its happened in the past I believe

Saorview is really turning out to be a very mixed bag.

Half Channels with only about 75% of the content on them (RTE+1)

Childrens Channel not on when the kids are home all day (Weekends)

Superb HD pictures when actually transmitting in HD !! And no previous information on EPG if planned transmission will be in Native HD

A potentially good addition RTE Plus binned pre-launch

No information on potential TV or Radio additions

SKY are lining up loads of free gifts (SKY Atlantic / ESPN) and price freezes to ensure inertia

Hardly a mention of RTE's additional channels on the SAORVIEW platform from the RTE stations

Co-Channel interference and .........a dumb TV ad

    Not looking too good lads.

I watched the match live on satellite and the picture quality was appalling.
It was unacceptable for a hurling match, worst I've seen in a long time.

The live sport in real HD is by ar the best thing about Saorview so far

Blame the last government for that

Children shouldn't be inside watching tv all weekend

If the EPG is needed to tell you if a programme is HD then perhaps HD isn't needed at all

    Co-Channel interference

Can't say I have experienced this myself

I watched the first half of dublin tyrone on saorview hd then went over to another house and watched the second half on chorus digital mmds.. they difference was unreal.....so when it works its great.. it does show up how useless and defunct the mmds system is in this age..

Minstrel - instead of blaming the last government, I would be more interested in trying to influence the current one to invoke change.

Agreed TV all weekend not a good idea for kids - but then again I didnt say that it was ?

I would have thought that the EPG should be used to highlight to users relevant information such as program being transmitted in Native HD - the same as SKY do ?

I havent experience Co-Channel interference - nor have I experience of Malaria - but I know that with proper planning chances of getting either is much restricted.

I was a huge advocate of Saorview to family and friends - now you would question whether to say anything to anyone about it as it really isnt delivering to its true potential.

That said, I love the live sport in HD, like having RTE NN to catch up, know neighbours who were catching glimpses of Fair City through the snow up to a few months ago and cant get over the picture quality now - just feel it could be / should so much more with a little more support.

ridiculous answer. because the service is available all day doesn't mean they will be watching it all day. what it would mean if you needed to let them watch it for a certain period(i.e. it starts pouring out of the heavens for a half hour, has been known to happen in this country) then at least the service is there.

and if we go with your logic it's okay to watch all week, as long as they don't on weekends. please.

i guess the rest of us miss the telepathic skills to know a few days in advance if a show is going to be HD or not. having to wait for a show to come on air to tell if it is going to be in HD or not is very poor implementation

I agree totally with Strawberry HillBilly's points.
I also think the current setup is missed opportunity for RTE to generate additional revenue:
    1) If we had RTE choice channel, RTE could charge a reasonable level for advertising on this channel.
    2) Even with RTE1+1, it should be a 24hr channel, thus maximising advertising rates.
    3) RTEjr should be allowed to advertise (although as a parent, it's nice to have a channel that doesn't have advertising.......but RTE can't afford this luxury in this day and age)
    4) Why not have RTE2+1 straight away. Again this would enable higher advertising rates!!

All the above would require minimal investment and yield an immediate return. Then RTE may not need to request an increase in the tv licence every single year!!!

not really, just common sense to know that the availability of any service doesn't mean people will use that service every second it is available.

It was more of a question/statement than an answer. Thanks anyway.

With regards to your points RTÉ are not allowed to do any of them.

Yes, but RTE were prevented from doing any of this by the last part-time minister Carey who signed a Statutory Instrument denying them this. Ony TV3 and Sky benefit from such a decision, but surely the previous government would not be swayed by such lobbying, would they?

As a consequence RTE are not allowed to change their channel allocation without a new consultation round, which is going to take time, and may come out with the same result.

It was a stitch-up in my opinion, and should be reviewed by our new Miniter, Rabbitte, without a new round of wasteful consultation.

Yep, I understand that RTE's hands are tied at the moment. I was criticising the rediculus legalisation!!!
A proper solution would be to allocate the tv licence money among the home broadcasters based on % of public interest broadcasts. The tv3's argument would be diminished!!

Under a FF gov. Ray Burke stitched up RTE to allow commercial interests to benefit by capping their advertising revenue. Under a FF government, Pat Carey (as caretaker minister) signed a SI that stitched up RTE to benefit commercial interests by preventing the developing new channels on Saorview and preventing the running advertising on RTE NN and RTE jr, and because RTE 1+1 has no new programming and much of it blank screens, no additional advertising on that either. A complete stitch up.

TV3 get some of the licence money and use it to make rubbish programmes.

    Didn't know that!!!!

BAI Sound & Vision fund, 7% of TV licence fee fund.

The Tenements series, currently running on TV3 was 85% funded in Round 9 last year up to €295,000.

It should be a requirement that this fact should be shown, not just the fact that it was supported, but to what extent. TV3 have made a lot of rubbish programmes on the back of the sound and vision fund. They have also refused to pay for DTT. They also exceed the allocation of advertising time during popular UK soaps.

Just a quick thought on the multi language option - I wonder if RTENL would dare set RTE2HD include an English option on minor games where the default language is As Gaelige ?

Haven't noticed any live GAA championship match in HD yet on RTE2 this season. Thought Dublin v Westmeath last night from Croker would have been. When's the first one due I wonder?

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 17,354 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gonzo

The only reason most people in our area have bothered with Saorview is to receive the Freeview overspill signal, there's gonna be quite a few angry users when Mux 2 is finally switched on and we end up losing the Freeview Mux with Sky News, Dave and some other channels so that we can receive TV3 in HD or whatever they choose to put on Mux 2. Channel 23 with 5 USA and 5* is already hidden from us due to Mount Leinster interference which is annoying enough as it is.

Normally you would see (HD) in the Saorview EPG for the programme info if it's in HD. Don't know if it was there today.
