    Hey Guys,

I thought this might be interesting to see - so that others can get ideas about gear, and get comments about how well they work from those who own them! :D

    I'll start:

    Canon 1D MK II
    Canon 400D
    Canon 40D
    Canon 25-105 F4L
    Canon 200mm f2.8L
    Canon 50mm f1.8
    Sigma 18-200 f3.5-6.3 (For the 400, twas my first! :) )
    Canon 580EX II Flash Gun
Canon CP-E4 Battery Pack for 580 EXII

    And various film cameras!

So what do you have? :)

So what do you have? :)

Is it wise to have a gear bragging thread? It could become a burglars
    catalogue.

    Anyway, I have:

    Canon 500D
    Canon 18-135 IS
    Canon 50mm f/2.5 macro
    Canon 50mm f/1.8
    Canon 430EX II
    Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 (non VR)
    Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO
    Sigma 105mm f/2.8 macro.

A steel crowbar and a large pickaxe handle. (note lack of smiley)

I was thinking of picking up a good macro, what do you think of the 50mm and the 105?

I love the 50mm f/2.5. It is one of the sharpest 50mm Canon lenses. I often
use it as a general purpose 50mm prime. It is only 1:2 magnification, so you
could argue that it isn't a 'true' 1:1 macro lens. Build quality is old-style
and very good. Autofocus is quite good, but not as fast as the newer
    USM lenses.

I bought the Sigma 105mm yesterday, so I haven't had time to evaluate
it properly. My initial impression is that it lives up to it's reputation as a
very sharp lens. Build quality is good. Manual focusing is very good
due to the large and and smooth focus ring. Auto focus is slow and
    unreliable.

    at last check ... 5 digital bodies (40D, 1D mk2 (2 of them), 7D, 1D mk4), 1 Film body (Canon Eos-3) , 1 Medium Format camera (Hasselblad H1), 3 digital compacts (G10, G11 and Fujifilm F31).

approx 35 lenses (from 16mm to 600mm), 6 speedlite flashes (580 or 580 mkII), off camera cords, wireless transmitters, underwater housings (3), 2 underwater strobes and various TTL Cables, 2 ID Card printers...4 laptops (I only use 1 and keep 1 for ID Card printing only - the other two are just in a box somewhere)

probably a few other bits and pieces - just what I can remember at last check (a fair bit of the stuff has been borrowed by colleagues, friends and boardsies.)

    Canon 500D
    Canon 50mm f/1.8
Canon 18-55 EF-S IS (kit lens)
    Canon 75-300mm f/4-5.6
    Hahnel Triad 30
    Generic wireless trigger
    500D Body Armor

On my wishlist at the moment:
Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 EX DC HSM or a Tamron SP AF 28-75mm F2.8 Di (can't decide which one to go for - more reach or replace the kit lens? Its a tricky one)
Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 APO EX DG II
    Battery Grip
    Speedlight 430EX II

Nince kit PC! What would you recommend picking up a second MkII or a 7D?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,171 ✭✭✭af_thefragile

    Very basic:

Canon 1000D (hopefully will soon upgrade to 600D so I can start shooting videos!)
    Canon 50mm f/1.8
Canon 18-55mm EF-S IS (kit lens)
    Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6

    58mm UV filter
    58mm Circular polarizing filter
    58mm Variable neutral density filter
    Conkin ND8 Graduated filter

Manfrotto tripod with a three way adjustable head and a ball head which I never really use.

    Wish list:
    Upgrade to Canon 600D
    Sigma 30mm f/1.4
    Manfrotto fluid video head
    Intervalometer

Good question ..... never thought of it before..... Hmmm....

on one hand, the 7D is newer, different sensor (1.6x) and faster processor, but its made for the prosumer and not professional ....the 1D mkII is a magnificent professional tool, colours are muted when compared to the 7D and noise is evident at lesser ISO levels....so its faster but older

however .... the current price of a secondhand 7D is about €1000-1100 ...current price of a secondhand 1D mkII €750-850....resale value in approx a year the 7D will drop, the 1D mkII is unlikely to drop much in that time.

PC, Can I ask why you bother with so much gear? Do you enjoy reading up on things, searching out a good deal and then playing with new stuff? (Obviously new 'toys' will have a novelty value and can make your general photography a little more interesting or exciting whilst you figure it out).

I just can't understand having any more than three of anything (main gear, a second camera for when you need to dual-wield, and a backup incase anything goes wrong with either of them).

I don't understand the idea behind 5 bodies, 6 flashguns, etc.?

    well Shane,
I know a few lads from Press 22 here in Limerick (Press Agency) and they use 2 5D MKII's 2 1D Mk III's (although some of em hate using the Mk III, and go back to the MK II) So you'll need different bodies depending on the situation, (Some sports ground may require using a 1.6x crop rather then using an extender). At least thats what I assume it is :p

Looks like I'm the first non-Canon DSLR reply:

Sony Alpha A550 (can't wait for the A77 in October)

Various Sony, Tamron and Sigma lenses (from 10mm to 400mm, with a few primes and macros), extension tubes, teleconverter (rarely used)

Macro Flash, 2 x Sigma EF 530 DG Super Flash, Sony HVL-F20AM Compact Flash, Lumiquest Softbox

Manfortto Tripod and Monopod, Velbon Super Mag Slider Focus Rail

    Intervalometer

Black Rapid RS-7 Camera Strap & Sony Hand strap

T-ring and adapter to connect Alpha 550 to Telescope on a motorised Equatorial Mount

2 x Compact Canons with underwater housings.

While I've plenty of Canon gear, there is no way I'd list it all on a public forum.

Would you open your door as quickly to a stranger and show them everything in your home??

    A familiar tale ...

Canon 1000D (upgrading to a 60D this week most likely)
    Canon 18-55mm kit lens
    Canon 50mm f/1.8 II
    Sigma 70-300mm
Hoya ND filter and circular polariser
Cheapo tripod, can't remember the brand

    they're the most interesting bit!

speaking as an amateur, i can't see the need for any more than one DSLR body. do people just keep hold of the old one they upgrade from?

I'm strictly an amateur too, and I only have one DSLR body, but I can see the attraction of having two.

I took a walk out on the Burren a couple of weeks ago. It's such a cool place, that I was taking a big mix of pictures - landscapes, zooming in on birds and distant features, and macro stuff of flowers and insects. That's the problem with amateurs like me - a professional would be out to take a specfic shot or type of shot (and do it right). I get too easily distracted to focus on one thing, but that's the way I like it. I was constantly changing lenses - tricky enough on the crag where it can be difficult to get your footing. Having my macro lens on one body, and the 18-270 on another would have made things a bit easier and safer.

Now, I certainly wouldn't go out and buy a new camera just to have as a second in situations like this, but if I'm getting the A77 later this year, I might just hang on to my A550. Up to now I've always sold my old camera to get the new one, but I'm thinking of keeping it this time.

lugging a second body around would be as much hassle as changing lenses, i'd suspect.

I'd often be carrying a second body, and I have to say, it's really not much effort at all (though I use a dual-strap, so I can just let them hang by my side when I'm not using them).

The only downside to this is when you need to crouch or such, as the camera you're not handling at the time, comes very close to the ground (depending on how low you drop) and you could easily belt the top of the lens off the ground.

Thats why you normally put on the lens hood :D

And btw guys, this thread is a handy way to get people to find out more info on a bit of kit etc. that they may be interested in from those who have it! :)

i have some still photography gear, but i'm showing some stuff i've got recently, it's a video rig for a D SLR, the Canon EOS 7D is shown here, the rig isn't actually complete yet, i still have to get an audio solution - the onboard audio is poor on these cameras
was thinking of getting a zoom h4n and perhaps down the line a Glidecam

anyway heres a few pics of the rig!!

Depending on the level of commercial activity you're involved in, it can be very advantageous to have a 2nd body as backup of for a radically different lighting/lens setup. even moreso if you have a full frame and a crop frame, the crop factor can really work in your favour.

Very nice. Jealous! Can recommend the Zoom h4n bought one a couple of months ago.

That's a very cool rig Fionn!

I'm planning on getting into video as well after I get my 600D, which should be next week hopefully!

Mind asking what rig you used for the camera?

The Zoom H4n is brilliant for recording audio. There's also a H2n coming out which looks pretty cool as well. It doesn't have the xlr inputs that the H4n has but its cheaper.

Its the other brand Storm, I think the equivalent is the Peli 1510. The foam falls apart though, probably end up replacing it with the dividers

hardly anything at all at the moment that i could have public!!
my vimeo page is here http://www.vimeo.com/cluainmeala which i'm hoping to add to in the coming months :)
Mind asking what rig you used for the camera?
got it from a crowd in India called dvcity.com, I had looked at some of the other offerings like Redrock, Cinevate, Zacuto etc. but their prices are way too inflated for my liking.
Am I the only one that thinks that Video Rigs for SLR's look insanely odd and quite funny
I thought that too - they look like things from a science fiction movie, i have a conventional camcorder (Sony HXR-MC2000) but i also wanted to have a super 35mm look too and seeing that i had a Canon 7D!
but what i found tho! was that I couldn't hand hold it good enough to record video, the form factor is all wrong, so hence the rigs.
this thing is heavy so i'm thinking of some stablising system or whatever at some point too !

    :)
