I need to get some TV into a new house, now that Saorview is going to be on satellite is it worth the bother of putting up an aerial too ? I'm happy enough with free to air channels. Finally, what are the best choices for Dishes, aerials and receivers ?

Get both. For the Dish get Freesat or Sky. Sky will supply a dish if you join them. Get an UHF ariel and a Saorview approved TV or STB. RTE 2 in HD is exclusively available on Saorview. There is no talk about RTE HD Channels on Sky.

What tv equipment do you currently have?

I'd only consider the satellite-only option if I already had a collection of DVB-S2 sat boxes paired with non Saorview compatible tvs (or if you live in an area with poor or non-existant terrestrial signal).

Get both. Small extra cost for Aerial

To feed to an arbitrary number of TVs is easy with aerial. It's more complex with satellite. Also VERY heavy rain or snow may "knock out" satellite. High winds can also be a problem for dishes more than aerials.
